=Ovviamente De Valera non è il viscido e molle personaggio che Alan Rickman interpreta. Non è umanamente possibile. E' un personaggio che il regista prima e l'attore poi plasmano e caratterizzano. Lo spettatore, poi, se davvero vuole capire se Dev era una tale cacca, gonfia il petto e si prende l'onore e l'onere di approfondire l'argomento.

A me non sembra che il film faccia passare l'IRA (dei tempi) come gente candida, però certamente mette in risalto il diverso modo fi agire rispetto ai Black&Tans e alle varie forze militari e paramilitari inglesi: i primi avevano come loro nemici tutti coloro che collaboravano al mantenimento del potere inglese in Irlanda, i secondi si sono resi colpevoli di stragi di civili e devastazioni degne delle SS, come quella di Cork ma non solo.
Poi c'è anche chi, come dice Adoratore, potrebbe vederlo nell'ottica Signore degli anelli, però a quel punto il problema si riproporrebbe con ogni film storico e non è problema del film quanto di chi lo vede acriticamente...
Sulla figura di DeV concordo con Martina (che ovviamente ne sa molto più di me), non è stato dipinto come uno stupido, ma come un politico astuto al limite del cinico, o meglio oltre tale limite.

Martin McDonagh invited to join Academy

Playwright and filmmaker Martin McDonagh has been invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The Academy has extended membership invitations to 120 people "who have distinguished themselves in the field of theatrical motion pictures."

McDonagh's debut short film, the Brendan Gleeson-starring 'Six Shooter' won an Oscar earlier this year.

Others include 'Brokeback Mountain' stars Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, German director Werner Herzog ('Grizzly Man', 'Fitzcarraldo'), 12-year-old actress Dakota Fanning ('War of the Worlds', 'The Cat in the Hat') and country music star Dolly Parton.

This group will be the only new voting members invited to join the organisation in 2006.

Academy president Sid Ganis said the Oscar-awarding body had become "more selective" in the past two years.

The membership committees for each of the 14 branches are now "selecting the most exceptionally qualified" candidates.

39 of the 120 invitees were nominated for awards earlier this year and eight won Oscars.

McDonagh is to make his feature film directorial debut with a story of a hitman called 'In Bruges'.

Il regista e sceneggiatore irlandese di Dead Long Enough, Tom Collins, torna dietro alla macchina da presa con Kings, co-produzione irlandese-britannica che verrà girata in cinque settimane in location a Belfast, Dublino e Londra.

Adattamento per il grande schermo, scritto da Collins, di una piece, acclamata dalla critica, di Jimmy Murphy, “The Kings of the Kilburn High Road”, il film narra la storia di un gruppo di emigranti irlandesi che si rincontrano il giorno del funerale di uno dei loro amici. Protagonista principale è Colm Meaney, mentre il direttore della fotografia è P.J. Dillon. Kings è un film in due lingue, inglese e principalmente irlandese, prodotto da Jackie Larkin per Newgrange Pictures e totalmente finanziato in Irlanda. I fondi provengono dall’Irish Film Board, dalla Broadcasting Commission of Ireland, TG4, dal Northern Ireland Film and Television Commission e dall’Irish Language Broadcast Fund. Il co-produttore britannico è Michael Casey.

The Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, John O'Donoghue, launched Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board's 2007 Production Catalogue in Dublin last night.

Among the Irish films due out next year are 'Garage', the new tragi-comedy from 'Adam & Paul' director Lenny Abrahamson, which stars Pat Short and Anne-Marie Duff; 'Shrooms', the new horror comedy from 'Man About Dog' director Paddy Breathnach; and director John Carney's film 'Once', which stars The Frames' Glen Hansard.

Other films set for an Irish cinema release include the animated feature 'Ugly Duckling and Me!' and 'Small Engine Repair', the debut feature of award-winning director Niall Henry.


Among the film and TV projects set to shoot in Ireland next year are series five of 'Murphy's Law', series two of 'The Tudors', 'Dorothy Mills', 'The Old Curiosity Shop' and 'My Boy Jack'.

Launching the Production Catalogue, Minister O'Donoghue said: "2006 has been a very productive year for the Irish film and television industry. There is a wide range of new and innovative Irish films which will be screening at international festivals and released in cinemas next year. We have awarded Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board (IFB) a 15% increase in their annual budget and look forward to continued growth in 2007."

Irish film wins prestigious award at Sundance Festival

A low-budget Irish film has taken one of the most prestigious prizes at the most important US film festival over the weekend.

The film, Once, received the World Cinema Audience Award at the closing ceremony of the Sundance Film Festival - which was established by actor-director Robert Redford to foster independent productions - in Park City, Utah.

"I hope I don't wreck this by crying - doing something Irish and emotional," the film's writer-director John Carney said as he collected the prize on Saturday night.

Once is a musical, and more words are sung than spoken as it charts the tender relationship that forms between two musicians - a Grafton Street busker (Glen Hansard) and a Czech pianist (Marketa Irglova) who sells roses and the Big Issue on the street.

Carney, who directed On the Edge and has been one of the team behind the RTÉ series Bachelors Walk , affectionately observes these two lonely characters as they are drawn to each other, and their instinctive chemistry is beautifully expressed when they make sweet music on an improvised duet.

Irglova graces the film with a serene, endearing presence and Hansard, in his first movie since The Commitments 15 years ago, performs with the passion he exudes on stage with his band, The Frames.

The film will be shown at the Dublin International Film Festival next month.

"We have had a wonderful reaction at Sundance," the film's executive producer, David Collins of Dublin-based Samson Films told The Irish Times . "So many people wanted to see the film that the festival added four extra screenings. And Glen and Marketa have been singing on stage after every screening. The audience loved them."

So did the critics. "I liked the movie right from the opening scene," Scott Foundas wrote in LA Weekly . "It's the sort of completely unhyped, unheralded little gem you go to a festival like Sundance hoping to find, and every once in a while, do."

"The movie pulled all the right strings," according to popular film website, Ain't It Cool.

The film attracted the attention of many international buyers at Sundance, concluding in a deal between Samson Films and the prominent US company Summit Entertainment to sell the cinema, DVD and TV distribution rights to Once around the world.

Nuovo film per Eric Styles
Riprese in corso a Belfast per Buy Borrow Steal, nuova commedia romantica del regista britannico Eric Styles (Dreaming of Joseph Lees, Relative Values), da uno script originale di Camilla Leslie.

Prodotto da Doris Kirch per la tedesca Blue Angel Films, il film vede la partecipazione di Heather Graham (Austin Powers: la Spia che ci provava, Bobby), nel ruolo di una 33enne che lascia il fidanzato, che non condivide il suo desiderio di maternità, quando scopre di essere vicina ad una menopausa precoce.

Nel disperato tentativo di opporsi all’orologio biologico, si lancia in una serie di frenetici e elaborati tentativi, tra donatori di seme via internet, frequentatori di locali notturni e di funerali. Mia Kirshner (The Black Dahlia, Exotica) e Tom Ellis (Buffalo Soldiers) sono gli altri due protagonisti.

Le riprese di Buy Borrow Steal si svolgeranno per otto settimane tra Irlanda del nord e a Londra. Il film è co-prodotto da Michel Morales della tedesca Miromar Entertainment e finanziato dalla Northern Ireland Film & Television Commission (NIFTC).

Ho visto di recente questo bellissimo film,che racconta la storia di un'amicizia complicata e divertente tra due bambini completamente diversi,che vivono in due parti diverse di Belfast negli anni 70,con famiglie e credenze opposte,ma con un senso comune di avventura,e una grande amicizia che li unisce nei guai...i due si incontrano per caso e finiscono nell'identificarsi con Butch Cassidy e Sundance Kid,combinando guai,nel periodo dei Troubles...

I due piccoli protagonisti,Mickybo e Jonjo,sono due non-attori che nel film sono stati bravissimi,professionali e davvero spontanei al tempo stesso!

Il film e' davvero interessante e originale,visto con gli occhi ingenui di due bambini,che sono piu' interessati alla loro vita che ai problemi del Nord Irlanda...

Il film ha vinto nel 2005 IFTA Award Best Costume Design for Film

In ‘Connolly’ his life is seen through the eyes of his daughter Nora, his most trusted lieutenant, and the story is rooted in his relationship with his great love, Lillie, and his children. ‘Connolly’ spans almost twenty years. During that time, he and his family suffer privation and great tragedy, but remained undaunted.

Connolly takes his cause from Ireland of the early 1900s to the United States and his work with the Wobblies, the Industrial Workers of the World. After seven years there he returns to Ireland to help James Larkin establish the Irish Transport & General Workers Union.

The brutal way in which the working class of Dublin is treated by capitalist employers during the 1913 Lockout reinforces Connolly’s commitment to break the link with Britain and establish an Irish Workers’ Republic. By forming the Irish Citizens’ Army he creates the means to move towards the Revolution of Easter 1916.

The failure of that first phase of the Revolution leads to his capture, and though gravely wounded he is shot by a British Army firing squad while tied to a chair. But the torch passes to Nora and a new generation.

Connolly is the story of an ordinary man who creates a revolution, of his family’s sacrifices to help him achieve his goal, of a unique father-daughter relationship forged in the heat of socialist agitation, and of a young girl’s transition to independent woman committed to revolutionary struggle.

Connolly is written for a universal mainstream audience, but in the knowledge that this story will have particular appeal for an Irish audience and for the Irish Diaspora. The relationship between Connolly and his daughter as comrades in revolution instils an unusual and intriguing dynamic into an exciting and action-filled story. Valgono la pena entrambi. Il primo perché girato a Glasgow e rappresenta a mio avviso l'ultimo acuto di Ken Loach prima dell'agonia (vedi Ae Fond Kiss e per certi versi The Wind...) e il secondo perché nell'episodio firmato da KL i protagonisti sono dei tifosi del Celtic

Insomma notizie fresche non ce ne sono... su IMDB l'ultimo aggiornamento allo status è di novembre scorso e si parla di "announced"...
Aggiungo che il regista è Allen Dunbar e nel cast ci saranno Peter Mullan (James Connolly), Patrick Bergin (Jim Larkin) e Susan Lynch (Lillie Connolly).

Il film e' stato girato a Dublino,con digital video,e in sole due settimane,e chiunque viva qui,riconoscera' ogni singolo posto in cui i protagonisti sono ripresi...
la maggior parte e' in Grafton Street,dove il protagonista (Glen Hansard,cantante dei Frames)e' uno dei tanti buskers,con una chitarra mezza distrutta,e in cerca di popolarita' per le sue canzoni.Qui incontra una pianista e cantante Ceca (Marketa Irglova)e comincia una strana amicizia e collaborazione artistica,che li porta ad incidere un Cd.

Although insubstantial, 'Once' is a beautiful and bittersweet film with more than enough soul - and heart - to capture a wide audience. An unexpected treasure.

La scorsa settimana al cinema ho visto "Kings" con Colm Meaney e devo dire che non e' affatto male, anche se un po' complicato da seguire in gaelico(anche se sottotitolato in inglese)

Oggi invece vado a vedere Garage che sembra molto molto interessante

Non perdetelo!! davvero un bel film, a tratti un po' lento ma fa parte del film, per capire meglio il personaggio
un film che suciramente non lascia indifferenti!

Film da perdere assolutamente(a meno che non vi intrighi una storia che è una via di mezzo tra un libro harmony e una telenovela sudamericana): Falling for a dancer.
Si, è vero, ci sono due cose belle da vedere in questo film: i paesaggi e Colin Farrell...ma non è abbastanza, fidatevi!

L'Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) ha annunciato l'elenco dei nominati nelle 33 categorie della quinta edizione degli Annual Irish Film and Television Awards.

Kings, film in lingua irlandese di Tom Collins, è davanti a tutti con 14 nomination in totale, seguito a stretto giro da Garage di Lenny Abrahamson a quota 11.

Entrambi sono in corsa per il Premio al Miglior Film assieme al biopic su Jane Austen Becoming Jane - Il ritratto di una donna contro, a Closing the Ring di Richard Attenborough (girato in Irlanda del Nord) e all'horror di Paddy Breathnach Shrooms.


Kings e Garage hanno ottenuto delle nomination anche nelle categorie Miglior Regista, Sceneggiatura, Costumi e Production Design. Anche le star delle due pellicole, Colm Meaney e Pat Shortt, sono in corsa per il Premio al Miglior Attore protagonista. Assieme a loro ci sono Cillian Murphy (Sunshine ), Gabriel Byrne (Jindabyne) e Hugh O'Conor (Speed Dating).

Lenny Abrahamson e Mark O'Halloran, rispettivamente regista e scrittore di Garage, hanno ricevuto nomination anche nella categoria Miglior Regista Televisivo e Sceneggiatura per la Televisione per Prosperity, dramma targato RTE, che ha ottenuto cinque candidature in tutto.

Con due nomination ci sono inoltre gli attori Don Wycherley (Miglior Attore non protagonista per il cinema e Miglior Attore protagonista per la televisione), la vincitrice del Premio alla Miglior Attrice dello scorso anno, Fionnula Flanagan (candidata per il suo ruolo da protagonista in Brotherhood e non protagonista in Paddywhackery). Le star di The Clinic (Amy Huberman e Dawn Bradfield) e di The Tudors (Maria Doyle Kennedy) si contendono invece il Premio alla Miglior Attrice non Protagonista per la televisione.

Nella categoria Miglior Attrice non protagonista per il cinema, l'esordiente Saoirse Ronan (Espiazione) e Gail Fitzpatrick (Strength and Honour) hanno ricevuto la loro prima nomination agli IFTA assieme ad una vincitrice del passato, Anne Marie Duff (Garage) e ad Elaine Cassidy (And When Did You Last See Your Father?).

Tra gli altri nominati al loro debutto agli IFTA, ci sono i giovani protagonisti di Prosperity, Siobhan Shanahan e Leroy Harris, l'affermato attore Michael Gambon (Celebration) e lo scrittore/regista (ma ex attore) Stuart Townsend (Battle in Seattle).

Le nomination per la categoria Documentari includono At Home with the Clearys e Ireland's Nazis, The Undertaking di Cathal Blacks, Bloody Sunday: A Derry Diary, Get Collins e Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten.

Oltre a questi, quattro sono i candidati al Premio Pantene alla Miglior Attrice Internazionale: Cate Blanchett per Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Jodie Foster per Il buio nell'anima, Keira Knightley per Espiazione e Hilary Swank for P.S. I Love You- Non è mai troppo tardi per dirlo. Il pubblico irlandese vota direttamente il Premio, che ha visto negli anni scorsi il trionfo della Knightley e di Helen Mirren.

Il Direttore generale degli IFTA, Aine Moriarty, ha dichiarato: "Abbiamo avuto un altro anno molto buono per i talenti irlandesi con produzioni locali di elevata qualità. I membri dell'IFTA Academy hanno selezionato titoli che spaziano in un vasto repertorio di generi e stili, nei quali la lingua irlandese ha ottenuto un ruolo importante sia nel cinema che in tv".

La cerimonia si svolgerà il 17 febbraio al Gaiety Theatre di Dublino.

Naman Ramachandran

Il regista irlandese Jim Sheridan (Il mio piede sinistro, Nel nome del padre) trasformerà il romanzo del 1934 di Robert Graves, Io, Claudio, in un film.

Sheridan ne scriverà anche la sceneggiatura assieme a Nye Heron. Il romanzo narra la vicenda umana dell'imperatore romano, celebrato come il migliore della storia dell'impero. Josef von Sternberg ne aveva già tratto un film nel 1937, e negli anni '70 BBC ne aveva realizzato una serie con Derek Jacobi, John Hurt e Patrick Stewart.

Relativity Media ha acquisito i diritti della nuova versione assieme a Tucker Tooley, che sarà anche il produttore esecutivo. Brothers, il film più recente di Sheridan, è stato prodotto anch'esso da Relativity Media, uscirà nelle sale americane a dicembre. Sheridan dirigerà inoltre Emerald City di Radar Pictures, sulle bande irlandesi di New York.

Nel frattempo, il produttore Robert Zemeckis ed il regista Gil Kenan — già autori del film d'animazione nominato all'Oscar Monster House — porteranno sul grande schermo Airman, ultimo lavoro dello scrittore irlandese Eoin Colfer (Artemis Fowl).

Airman racconta la storia di un giovane che vive nell'Irlanda del XIX secolo, e che rivoluziona il mondo con le sue innovative macchine per volare. Colfer scriverà inoltre il nuovo capitolo della serie Guida galattica per gli autostoppisti, dal titolo And Another Thing….

Il prossimo film di Kenan sarà City of Ember, con Bill Murray e l'attrice Premio IFTA Saoirse Ronan. La pellicola è stata girata a Belfast l'anno scorso, e uscirà in Irlanda il 10 ottobre.

Saoirse Ronan, protagonista del film fantastico City of Ember, ha dichiarato che i suoi momenti preferiti della lavorazione del film, sono stati quelli condivisi con il co-protagonista Bill Murray.

L'attrice irlandese Premio Oscar Brenda Fricker riceverà il nuovissimo Premio Maureen O'Hara (in omaggio all'attrice hollywoodiana) del 9° Kerry Film Festival (1-8 novembre).

Fricker aveva ricevuto l'Oscar nel 1989 nella categoria Miglior Attrice non Protagonista per Il mio piede sinistro di Jim Sheridan, e aveva lavorato nuovamente col regista ne Il campo, tratto da una piece di John B Keane (nativo di Kerry), girato in location a Kerry.

O'Hara, che vive attualmente nella Contea di Cork, ha dichiarato: “L'assegnazione a Brenda Fricker del nuovo premio che porta il mio nome è per me un onore. Brenda ha dimostrato coraggio e determinazione nel corso di tutta la sua carriera, ed il suo ruolo di Mrs. Brown, premiato con l'Academy Award, è uno dei momenti più alti della storia della recitazione in Irlanda. Sono felicissima che Brenda abbia avuto questo premio, e le auguro il meglio per la sua carriera nel cinema e, soprattutto, nella vita”.

Fricker ha aggiunto: "Sono entusiasta di questo premio. È bello riceverne, e questo avrà un posto speciale nella mia bacheca, proprio accanto all'Oscar". Il Premio Maureen O'Hara va a donne che abbiano dimostrato nella loro carriera di essere leader nei rispettivi campi.

Nel corso della cerimonia di assegnazione verranno proiettati i cortometraggi vincitori del festival, selezionati da una giuria composta da Liam Neeson, Kirsten Sheridan, John Carney ed i filmmaker Premio Oscar Suzie Templeton e Vanessa Roth.

Il film di chiusura sarà invece Dambe: The Mali Project, documentario musicale che racconta il viaggio dei musicisti irlandesi Liam O' Maonlai e Paddy Keenan nelle scoperte musicali del festival più remoto al mondo, il Festival au Desert nel Mali.

Ho scoperto solo che il titolo del film dei fratelli Coen "Non è un paese per vecchi" é un verso tratto da "sailing to Byzantium" e che nel film "Million dollar baby" il manager Frankie Dunn, qundo rivela il significato dell'espressione in gaelico "Mo Cuishle", legge i versi de "The lake isle of Innisfree". Tuuto qui. Possibile che non esista film, anche datato, sulla vita di W.B. Yeats? Grazie per l'aiuto. Bye

Per intanto l'uscita di "Connolly" di Adrian Dunbar é rimandata per il 2009. Per la cronaca.
La presenza nel cast di Peter Mullan parla da sola.

Una commedia thriller ambientata nella madrepatria Irlanda è tra i futuri impegni dell'attore di Cork, Cillian Murphy.

In "Perrier's Bounty", Cillian è Michael, un criminale alle prime armi con un debito di soldi da saldare al gangster Perrier. Il giorno della riscossione, mentre gli uomini di Perrier lo minacciano, Brenda, un'amica di Michael un po' troppo emotiva, uccide per sbaglio uno degli scagnozzi. I due sono costretti a scappare con una taglia che pende sulle loro teste e durante la fuga saranno improvvisamente raggiunti da Jim, il padre di Michael.

L'attore inglese Jim Broadbent interpreterà il padre di Michael, mentre nel ruolo dello spietato Perrier l'irlandese Brendan Gleeson.

Secondo lungometraggio del regista irlandese Ian Fitzgibbon, la pellicola sarà prodotta dalla Parellel Films e dalla Number 9.

Cillian Murphy quest'anno ha recitato in "The Dark Knight", riprendendo il ruolo di Spaventapasseri già avuto in "Batman Begins". Tra le sue più recenti interpretazioni, il film vincitore della Palma d'Oro a Cannes nel 2006 "Il vento che accarezza l'erba" di Ken Loach.

Le riprese di "Perrier's Bounty" inizieranno a novembre in Irlanda
