Il ct dell'Irlanda Eddie O'Sullivan ha annunciato la formazione che domenica prossima al Flaminio di Roma (ore 15.30) affronterà l'Italia in un match della prima giornata del Sei Nazioni. Questo il XV dell'Irlanda anti-Italia: 15 Geordan Murphy; 14 Shane Horgan, 13 Brian O'Driscoll (capitano), 12 Gordon D'Arcy, 11 Denis Hickie; 10 Ronan O'Gara, 9 Peter Stringer; 8 Anthony Foley, 7 Denis Leamy, 6 Simon Easterby, 5 Paul O'Connell, 4 Malcolm O'Kelly, 3 John Hayes, 2 Shane Byrne, 1 Reggie Corrigan. A disposizione: 16 Frankie Sheahan, 17 Marcus Horan, 18 Donncha O'Callaghan, 19 Eric Miller, 20 Guy Easterby, 21 David Humphreys, 22 Girvan Dempsey. Due sono le novità in questa squadra rispetto a quella che ha giocato il test-match novembrino contro i Pumas dell'Argentina (vittoria per 21-19). Al centro Gordon D'Arcy tornerà a far coppia con Brian O'Driscoll. Per far posto al numero 12 che rientra Shane Horgan si sposta all'ala. Prima presenza nel Sei Nazioni per Denis Leamy del Munster, che va a rendere ancor più consistente il pack dei verdi. Prende il posto di Johnny O'COnnor.

ragazzi...sarà durissima...ai centri la coppia più forte del mondo...secondi solo e forse a Tana Umaga degli All Blacks...Brian O'Driscoll (in BOD we trust) e Gordon D'arcy...e gli altri non scherzano certo...in mediana Peter Stringer e il piede ad orologeria di Ronan O'Gara, all'ala Shane Horgan, a tallonatore Shane Byrne...la vedo grama!

Guardando le formazioni non si può certo dire che gli azzurri saranno favoriti, anzi...
Partendo dal presupposto che Domenica, dal mio posto in curva sud tiferò Irlanda, sarei però contento che la nazionale italiana giocasse una partita d'orgoglio e d'impegno, per rendere almeno un po' più dura la vita agli All Greens.

Comunque vada sono sicuro che assisteremo ad una giornata ricca di sport e di correttezza... cose che, avendo l'abbonamento per la mia squadra del cuore in serie A e girando anche in trasferta per l'Italia (dalla C1 alla A) non credo che troveremo nel calcio almeno per i prossimi cinquant'anni.

Quanto avrebbe da imparare il miliardario e narciso mondo del calcio dal più "operaio" ma forse più nobile mondo del Rugby.

THE DANCE OF BES.



Masculine forms of the Maori haka were, without doubt, in the earlier era of the Patu-pai-arehe people, dances of Bes, where the performer attempted to encapsulate all of the facial characteristics and physical attributes of the protective little Egyptian dwarf God. The dancer, to this day, assumes a squat or bow legged position and stomps the ground with all the force he can muster, slapping the thighs, rolling bulged out eyes, chanting ferociously while grimacing and poking out the tongue. The fearsome display is designed to let any challenger know that there will be no quarter given and that unwarranted incursion will be met with ferocity unto death. This was the role of Bes, the unflinching, uncompromising protector of women and children. Some of these male hakas of yesteryear, within living memory, were commenced low, at ground level, on one knee to accentuate the diminutive size of the dwarf god or to imitate his portrayed design on the Hei-Tiki pendant. In recent years the haka form that we in New Zealand and the rest of the world have become most acquainted with is the one performed by our "All Blacks" football team.





Soldiers of the Maori Battalion perform a haka in the Middle East during W.W.II. As in all haka performances, correct execution of the dance requires that the performer either squats low or assumes a position on one knee when commencing the dance. Throughout the dance the stooped or squatting appearance is religiously maintained. This can only be in homage to diminutive stature of the ferocious little dwarf God Bes, down from whom the Maori haka dances of protection for the whanau have come.

When a dignitary goes, formally, onto a Maori Marae they are accorded the honour of a challenge, wherein they are to walk unperturbed and without fear toward a weapon bearing warrior. The warrior seeks to intimidate the dignitary and break their resolve, courage and composure by his threatening antics, movements, grimaces and active dance. The warrior assumes a low, squatting or springing position and bulges out the eyes in wild fury, the tongue darting and the face grimacing. A token of peaceful intent is included in the ceremony, which allows the warrior to withdraw. The "challenge" contains all of the eye bulging, tongue lashing, symbolism of Bes, the dwarf god of Egypt, whose responsibility it was to vet all comers and allow no visitor into the household whose intent it was to do harm.

Despite the outwardly threatening appearance of the Bes haka dance to the uninitiated, women and children of the ancient tribes, or any who fully understood the benign tradition of Bes, would see a pseudo serious/ comical aspect within the male haka and be both heartened and amused by it. Knowing that the dancer was imitating Bes, the audience would look to performers who excelled in providing the most pronounced bulging of the eyes, extreme grimaces or facial, tongue whipping expressions. The comical aspect of Bes-related dancing is, quite probably, preserved in many of the haka dances of greater Polynesia. One of the most entertaining is the Tahitian "mosquito" dance, a very lively performance where the dancers jump to and fro, slapping themselves mercilessly. In another memorable Tahitian dance the belly is rolled in a very amusing way that's guaranteed to bring the house down with laughter. This hilarious ingredient of the dance, if it has a pedigree back to the ancient Children of Poutini, would have been in homage to the comically rotund, funny belly of Bes the comedian entertainer. It must take the performers of this dance considerable practice to learn how to do the bizarre tummy-roll. Belly-roll or women's "belly dancing" has long since been a traditional norm in Egypt and its satellite countries and tolerated by the Muslim religious leaders. The island of Moorea, opposite Papeete in the Tahitian group, was called, 'the island of the fairy folk with golden hair' (see Riddle of the Pacific, by James Macmillan Brown).

It seems reasonable to assume that these religious dance influences were passed down from the "Children of Poutini" ...the uru-kehu (reddish or golden tinged hair) and kiri-puwhero (light complexioned, reddish skin) offspring of Tangaroa/ Tangaloa who were, eventually, chased out of the Islands of Polynesia and fled to sanctuary in New Zealand. They were later found in New Zealand by the newly arriving Polynesian/ Melanesians, who, for a time, had to live, 'under the 'mana of the Patu-pai-arehe' or Turehu (the Children of Poutini). During this period of peace and sharing of unknown duration, the Patu-pai-arehe people taught many of their cultural expressions to Maori, including their Egyptian forms of moko chin tattooing for women or the more extensive facial tattooing for men. Maori oral traditions tell us that the art of Moko was learned from the Turehu, in such legends as the story of Mataora (Maori) and Niwareka (Turehu). This account also shows that aspects of haka (dance) were shared between the two cultures.

If Maori political activists and their entourage of "in the pocket, Uncle Tom" archaeologist/ historian/ anthropologist/ geneticist lackeys, who'll bend the truth to suit the required politics, continue to hold to the singular "Taiwanese" pedigree of all Maori, then they automatically dispossess themselves of the most profound cultural roots found within Maoridom. They can kiss "Good-bye" to many Mediterranean patterns like the koru, chevron, etc., many stories-myths-traditions, many religious expressions, most Gods such as Hei-Tiki or Rongorongo, much of the symbolism and art, large segments of language roots, virtually all landscape structures, all measurement standards and cairn marked geometries, most of the edible or staple crops and flora from other lands like South America, styles of dress, Egyptian/ Pictish pattern designs in facial tattooing and the deep-set religious pedigrees within traditional dancing, chants or song, etc. Staple food plants or other useful plants of Polynesia, originating in South America or Egypt and extending to New Zealand, include: kumara, karaka berry, the cotton plant, the bottle gourd, capsicum, banana, soapberry, tomato, papaya, pawpaw, pineapple, manioc, maize, potato (about 23 varieties), cabbage tree (Yucca), the Nile valley's bulrush or catspaw as well as taro (many varieties) from Egypt. Yam (a form of potato) could have come from several regions, including Egypt and South America.


Most significant aspects of the culture never came from the Taiwanese/ Malaya theatre of the world. To deny or render worthless and unmentionable, large sections of one's ancestry, regardless of the fact that some forebears were a beaten, captured and enslaved class without mana, is to demean the blood that flows, whether by ancient consent or force, within one's own veins. Apart from Waitaha and Moriori, who openly acknowledge and pay reverence to "all" their distant ancestors, mainstream Maori cannot now claim the "stonebuilders" as ancestors, having denied their memory for too long. The Patu-pai-arehe have been, clearly, relegated to another ethnic category. They were the "strangers", separate and distinct from, or classified as the enemies of, Maori, to be hunted to extinction. Sadly, even the existence of Waitaha and Moriori is disclaimed by this small, controlling political faction and gaggle of very vocal "spokespeople" at the helm of Maoridom. No prior claimants to the country, predating Maori, are tolerated and the very ancient regional histories of Waitaha or Moriori, etc., are not accorded formal recognition.

The early, traditional or "religious" dances brought to Oceania by the European/ Mediterranean people, thousands of years ago, would have included the dances of Bes for the entertainment/ protection of mothers and children. By appearance, the surviving "Bes" haka, which is, more-and-more, misinterpreted as, solely, an "offensive" warrior challenge, rather than a "defensive" protection dance, is becoming too dominant in New Zealand society and pushing the more serene women's long and short poi dances into the half remembered background. Many New Zealanders would like to see greater emphasis put back onto the women's graceful dances, with the easy listening harmonies, or see more of the children's stick and hand clap dances (See, Parallels in broad plot and fine detail between a Greek myth and a Maori myth). ovviamente pur vedendo tutte le altre le registro tutte...ancora un paio d'anni e affogherò nelle videocassette del rugby...

Che legnata si sono presi gli inglesi in quel di Cardiff!
Gran bella partita è stata Galles-Inghilterra... dal primo all'ultimo minuto; però, a dirla tutta, ho goduto un pochinino... no dai.. ho proprio goduto per la sconfitta inglese!
Secondo me sarà un 6 Nazioni pieno di sorprese...
Buon divertimento a chi sarà a Roma domani e a chi guarderà la partita in TV!

ROMA - Ed è di nuovo il tempo del Flaminio che canta l'inno di Mameli, con i tricolore che sventolano e la macchia verde degli irlandesi sparsa per lo stadio. "E io che come un bambino ancora una volta mi commuovo" dice Andrea Lo Cicero, la più recente gloria nazionale da quando ha segnato una meta a Twickenham in una partita dei Barbarians. Ricomincia il Sei Nazioni e per l'Italia è sempre lo stesso esame, verificare se i propri progressi l'abbiano avvicinata o no ai maestri della tradizione: le disillusioni sono state il pane quotidiano in questi anni.

La natura multiforme e imprevedibile del torneo ha avuto conferme anche dalle partite di ieri: il Galles ha battuto l'Inghilterra e la Scozia ha mancato solo negli ultimi minuti la vittoria contro la Francia campione l'anno scorso, in una gara che il ct scozzese Matt Williams ha definito "rubata", per una meta annullata e un'espulsione negli ultimi 10'. Gli scozzesi erano la squadra sulla quale fa la corsa l'Italia per non arrivare ultima e prendersi il Cucchiaio di Legno, questo per tutti quelli che non credono al programma di John Kirwan: "Noi questo torneo vogliamo vincerlo, così come vuole vincerlo l'Irlanda".

L'Italia che scende in campo oggi ha diverse peculiarità. Recupera Alessandro Troncon, che aveva saltato il Sei Nazioni dell'anno scorso per infortunio e poi aveva perso il posto soppiantato da Paul Griffen. Ma l'eccellente Heineken Cup con Treviso una condizione deficitaria del neozelandese l'hanno riportato in squadra, per la sua 86a presenza.


La mediana sarà inedita perché gli farà compagnia Luciano Orquera, 23enne di Cordoba con bisnonni di Torino e doppio passaporto. Peraltro sarà un'Italia molto italiana, con un solo equiparato, Roland De Marigny a estremo. E sarà un'Italia molto giovane, con una media di 24,5 anni, esaltata dalla presenza di Ludovico Nitoglia all'ala, il ragazzino romano autore di buone gare negli altalenanti test match di novembre.

Ma soprattutto sarà la migliore Italia possibile, con il ritorno di Gonzalo Canale e Andrea Masi come centri, con i fratelli Bergamasco, con la prima linea ormai consolidata. E' una miscela di gioventù inesperta e di giovane esperienza. Forse addirittura la migliore Italia di sempre per qualità individuale. "La migliore squadra, il miglior staff, la migliore organizzazione" dice Lo Cicero.

E ogni Sei Nazioni è l'attesa perché la fama di giocatore di Kirwan come attaccante fantasioso e imprendibile, si trasfonda in una squadra che ha fatto sempre della lotta statica la sua forza. L'anno scorso ci si vantò di uno 0-25 a Parigi e di un 3-19 a Dublino, come esempi di rugby difensivo ed eroico. Ma è questo il gioco che si accetta dagli azzurri? Gli avversari non credono che l'Italia possa uscire da queste abitudini. "La mischia italiana è la più forte di sempre" è il complimento che concede il coach irlandese Eddie O'Sullivan.

L'Irlanda è la favorita del torneo di quest'anno, alla luce anche dei risultati della prima giornata: per prendersi una vittoria finale che manca dal 1985 ha rinviato anche il ringiovanimento della squadra. La sua forza è nei due centri, Brian O'Driscoll e Gordon D'Arcy, quest'ultimo nominato miglior giocatore del torneo passato, considerati la migliore coppia di centri al mondo. "Ci vorrebbero un paio di bombe là in mezzo" scherzava Kirwan. Con i saltatori alti più di due metri fa paura anche la touche, gesto nel quale l'Italia è stata insufficiente negli ultimi match.

Come ogni anno il Sei Nazioni sarà il test della passione del pubblico, dell'accoglienza della città, della capacità organizzativa. Ci sarà il tutto esaurito e l'invasione irlandese contenuta in cinque-sei mila spettatori. Bene. Ma la vigilia ha avuto anche qualche confusa dichiarazione a proposito della voglia di cercarsi uno stadio più grande, avanzando anche una richiesta per l'Olimpico, che il calcio non può concedere e che il rugby non sa riempire. Tante chiacchiere inutili, se non nascondessero la voglia neanche tanto velata di portare via il Sei Nazioni da Roma.

O'Driscoll, D'Arcy injured in patchy Italian job

THE return from Rome today will be more of a retreat rather than a victory march as the Irish lost two key players, and almost their way, in the opening Six Nations skirmish.

Outplayed, outfought and out-thought for large chunks of a scrappy duel, Ireland eventually chiselled out a 28-17 win at a considerable price - Gordon D'Arcy is ruled out for the clash with Scotland at Murrayfield on Saturday, and probably longer, with a hamstring tear.

In addition, inspirational captain Brian O'Driscoll is a major doubt for the Edinburgh assignment with a similar problem, the extent of which won't be known until today.

Predictably, the injuries overshadowed the post-match analysis and O'Sullivan, who knows a thing or two about hamstrings from his own playing days, confirmed the worst fears about D'Arcy's fitness.

"I'm happy with the victory but seriously concerned about the injuries," acknowledged O'Sullivan last night.

"Gordon (D'Arcy) felt his go when running in support so it appears straightforward enough. He'll definitely be out for a while.

"With Brian (O'Driscoll) we're not so sure although worryingly it is in the same area. We'll have a better idea about his chances of playing next Saturday in the next 24 hours or so."

Both will be examined upon returning to Dublin later today with O'Sullivan due to select his team for Murrayfield this evening.

If medical opinion suggests delaying selection then given the importance of the player in question - namely, the talismanic O'Driscoll - have little doubt that O'Sullivan will press the pause button.

To lose one of the most talented centre pairing in the world would be careless, to lose both in the one match is unfortunate.

If the worst-case scenario is confirmed then Shane Horgan, Kevin Maggs and Rob Henderson will all come into midfield contention with Girvan Dempsey, Shaun Payne, Tommy Bowe and Tyrone Howe entering the equation on the wing,

"We're pleased to win the game," said O'Sullivan, keen to stress the positive.

"Italy played really well. They dominated possession in the first half but we got three scoring chances in that time and we took advantage of two of them.
"We struggled to clear our lines at times and I think we struggled with the lighter ball.

"But we got more possession in the second-half, we managed to maintain a better field position.

"We knew it would take 70 minutes or so to wear Italy down and that's what it came down to in the end," he added. Italy coach John Kirwan saluted his blue-clad heroes.

"I asked that we play at the same level as the other teams in the tournament and I think we did that today. We played very well," he said.

"Eddie O'Sullivan paid us a lot of compliments in the build-up to the match and today was a very good for experience - we matched Ireland and now we must start thinking about Wales.

"I'm disappointed by the final result but not by the performance," he added.

For Ireland, the emotions were very much reversed.

Now, the task is for O'Sullivan, and his staff, to ensure both the result and performance are in harmony for Saturday - with or without the blue-chip star O'Driscoll.

It was not a good day for Ireland.

They got the win they wanted, but it wasn't the start to the tournament or the performance they wanted.

They didn't play well. The forwards were comprehensively outplayed - except perhaps in the line-out - and that was a disaster.

I can honestly say that if Brian O'Driscoll hadn't been playing then it could easily have been a different result.

Italy played brilliantly, that was the best I've seen them play. Their discipline was excellent, especially at the ruck where they used to consistently infringe.

If they had kicked their goals early on then they could easily have won.

Ireland's pack was comprehensively beaten and Brian O'Driscoll basically won the game for them with his outside breaks.

Next week against Scotland - with that pack and possibly no centres - is going to be an interesting contest.

The Italians didn't have a cutting edge behind the scrum otherwise they may well have won.

A lot now depends on how badly injured Brian O'Driscoll and Gordon D'Arcy are.

Ireland don't have great strength in depth in that position and they will be hoping that at least one of them will be ready for next week.

We shouldn't take too much away from Italy. That was a fantastic performance from their pack.

A little bit more confidence in their backs and a couple of refereeing decisions going their way and they may well have won.

Ireland are still potentially a Grand Slam-winning team. They will move on from this.

If I was a bookmaker, though, I wouldn't have a clue who to put my money on now after the performances we've seen this weekend.

I have to say that the only team going into next week's matches happy is Wales. And that's a horrible thing to say
