DISARMO UNILATERALE IRA PROVISIONALS

Il portavoce di un'associazione di familiari ha fatto formale denuncia alla polizia dopo che Padre Reid ha paragonato gli unionisti ai nazisti per il loro trattammento dei cattolici.

Willie Frazer di FAIR (Families Acting for Innocent Relatives), che rappresenta le vittime della violenza dell'IRA, ha denunciato Padre Reid.

Il prete ha fatto questa analogia lo scorso mercoledì, durante un incontro pubblico tenutosi a Belfast. In seguito ha chiesto scusa per le proprie parole.

Mr Frazer fu protagonista di una vivace discussione con Padre Reid.

La PSNI ha confermato di aver ricevuto la denuncia.

Dopo l'incontro, Padre Reid disse di essere stato provocato e offeso da alcuni membri del pubblico riguardanti la sua integrità. Si è scusato quasi subito per il linguaggio utilizzato, però gli unionisti ghanno fortemente condannato le sue frasi.

Il Segretario per l'Irlanda del Nord ha riferito alla House of Commons di essersi unito alla condanna delle affermazioni del prete cattolico.

FINAL proof of the IRA’s July commitment to end all its paramilitary activities will only emerge in January 2006 when the next Independent Monitoring Commission (IMC) report is published, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and Justice Minister Michael McDowell said yesterday

The latest IMC report, delivered to both Governments late on Friday, is understood to be generally optimistic about the inactivity of the IRA throughout August.

However, the report, which is due to be published this week, only deals with a small fraction of the time elapsed since the IRA’s historic July stand down. Consequently all sides will refrain from judgment on the validity of the IRA declaration until January’s report is published.

However, Mr Ahern said he had been briefed on but had not yet read the latest report. “I think particularly people should be looking into specialist units to see what is happening with the specialist units because we know that there are sophisticated and highly financed and highly powered units within the IRA and where they go for the future hopefully will be indicated in this report,” he said.

The Government today published the latest report by the Independent Monitoring Commission into paramilitary activity.

In a Written Statement in Parliament the Secretary of State, Peter Hain MP said: “I have received the Seventh Report of the Independent Monitoring Commission (IMC). This report has been made under Articles 4 and 7 of the International Agreement that established the Commission and it reports on levels of paramilitary activity in Northern Ireland. I have considered the content of the report and I am today bringing it before Parliament. I have placed copies in the Library of the House.

“The report concludes that the PIRA statement, despite coming at a point when five sixths of the period under review had elapsed, is ‘very significant’. The statement and the act of decommissioning reported by the IICD on 26 September have created a platform for future progress and ‘initial signs following the PIRA statement are encouraging’. However, it is essential that the IMC, as they state, are able to observe ‘cumulative changes in behaviour over a more sustained period of time…’. I await the next Report of the Commission, due in January 2006.

“In the meantime I have decided to restore Sinn Féin’s Assembly allowances, with effect from 1 November, and will, in due course, recommend to the House that it lifts the suspension of allowances to Sinn Féin Members of Parliament, which took effect on 1 April this year.

“The report also concludes that paramilitaries, especially Loyalists and dissident Republicans, continue to exert a malign influence over communities which has obstructed the development of a ‘culture of lawfulness’. As I said in my Statement to Parliament on 14 October, it has taken a long time for the Republican movement to acknowledge that violence does not pay but it has now publicly done so. Loyalist paramilitaries must now also realise that exclusively peaceful and democratic means represent the sole way forward.

“Once again, I am grateful to the Commission for their submission of this report and for its careful analysis.”

Sono parole attese da molto tempo, però non riesco a capire se crederci o meno. Già molto tempo fa, ai tempi dei primi cessate-il-fuoco dell'Ira, si parlava di possibile guerra finita, di pace in arrivo, ma la storia di questi anni ha clamorosamente smentito tutte queste attese.
Ritengo che ci siano ancora troppe variabili in atto, anche all'interno dell'Ira, perché sono solo i Provos ad aver dichiarato la fine delle campagne militari mentre i vari dissidenti non sono assolutamente favorevoli a questa svolta.
Resterò a guardare con speranza all'evolversi degli avvenimenti, senza però illudermi troppo...

Cosa è cambiato in un anno?

I Provos, >> notizia di tre giorni fa <<, hanno chiuso con qualsiasi tipo di criminalità organizzata e, a parte qualche episodio di violenza interna alla comunità e alla creazione del servizio d'ordine per le parate orangiste di Ardoyne, di loro non si sa quasi più nulla.

Che fine hanno fatto le armi che non sono state distrutte dall'IMC?
I soldi della rapina alla Northern Bank, a cosa sono serviti?
