Police attacked with petrol bombs (BBC News Northern Ireland)
Police officers came under attack while dealing with two security alerts in Londonderry on Sunday.
A crowd of between 40 and 50 people threw petrol bombs and other missiles at officers in the Creggan area.
Police and army bomb officers were called to the area after a pipe bomb was thrown through the window of a car on Circular Road just before 2030 GMT.
A short time later, another device was found in a car in Iniscairn Crescent. Both devices failed to explode.
Police officers stayed in the area until about 0500 GMT. Both devices were removed for further examination.
SDLP councillor, Jim Clifford, said he saw some of the trouble on Sunday night.
“Some of the young people taking part were very young, no more than nine or 10 years old, and nobody wants to see that.
“The fact that pipe bombs were thrown is worrying, if one of them had exploded and someone was passing by, they could’ve been seriously injured,” he said.
“The people of Creggan don’t want this, we thought it was something we’d left behind.”
A number of pipe bombings in Derry in recent months have been blamed on dissident republicans but it is not yet clear who was responsible for the latest attacks.
