... set up a cafe' / restaurant [GO]

Introduction

As Ireland becomes more and more a cosmopolitan 'café society', opportunities for cafés and restaurants abound. But make sure that you meet the legal requirements before you open your doors to the public.

Steps

* Ensure that you have appropriate planning permissi0n(s) for your premises and any necessary changes to it.
* Ensure that your premises meet health and safety standards.
* Ensure that you have taken into account the needs of customers / potential customers with disabilities - both physical access and attitudes. Make sure that you don't break the law by discriminating - even unintentionally.
* Ensure that you hold a current Fire Safety Certificate, issued by your local authority, and an architect's or engineer's certificate that your premises complies with the fire safety requirements of the Building Regulations.
* Ensure that you develop and implement a food safety control system based on hazard analysis and critical control point (HACCP) principles and that all relevant staff are appropriately trained. Register with the Health Services Executive under the Food Hygiene Regulations and EC (Hygiene of Foodstuffs) Regulations. Obtain copies of, and comply with, the standards IS340:1994 "Hygiene in the Catering Sector and IS343:2000 "Food Safety Management incorporating HACCP".
* If you plan to serve alcohol, apply to the Revenue Commissioners for a special restaurant licence, having obtained the appropriate certificate from your local Circuit Court.
* Arrange public liability insurance for your premises with your insurance broker.
* Register with Fáilte Ireland in the appropriate category, pay the relevant fee and have your premises inspected by a registration officer. Successful registration will entitle you to benefit from its marketing and other support.
* Write a business plan for your café / restaurant, especially if you need funding.

Cost

* Registration fees for the various bodies above.
* Special restaurant licence - initial fee: €3,805.
