Comincio io.

In typical Irish fashion—roundabout rather than direct—Cillian Murphy decided to become an actor. After cutting his teeth creatively as an amateur musician and later dropping out of law school, Murphy segued into acting by pestering a local theater director into giving him an audition. With no clear plan and gaping holes in his acting repertoire, Murphy began earning parts in local plays. But it was his turn in the stark two character drama, “Disco Pigs,” that propelled him into a bona fide actor. Originally set to run for three weeks in a 40-seat theater, “Disco Pigs” became a surprise hit, taking Murphy and co-star Eileen Walsh from Cork to Dublin, Edinburgh and London’s famed West End. For Murphy, it was the start of a life and career hitherto unfathomed.

Born in Cork, Ireland, to schoolteacher parents, Murphy’s first passion was music. He formed a band with his younger brother called the Sons of Mr. Green Genes—an ode to Frank Zappa—which Murphy described in the New York Times as being “very much like 20-year-olds showing off how proficient they were with their instruments.” Much to the relief of his parents, he dropped his musical ambitions to study law at University College Cork. His interest in law waned rather quickly, however—a year and a half to be exact—and Murphy drifted elsewhere, namely the Corcadorca Theater Company, a local theater where he began harassing the director who cast him in “Disco Pigs.” The play opened to rave reviews and remained a European staple throughout the years. It was then turned into a film in 2001 by Kirsten Sheridan, daughter of famed Irish director Jim Sheridan. Murphy reprised his role onscreen, but reviews were not as glowing for the film as for the play.

Eighteen months of touring with “Disco Pigs” led to an Irish rendition of “Much Ado About Nothing,” the first—and possibly last—Shakespeare in the young thespian’s career. Given the part of the “love interest”—possibly Benedick, but his memory has been foggy on the matter—Murphy felt he was saddled with the most boring character in the play. He then made his film debut in “The Trench” (1999), a dramatization about the lead-up to the Battle of the Somme during World War I in which Murphy’s character was blown to bits in the first thirty minutes. Murphy next appeared in “Sunburn” (1999), playing a slacker vacationing on Long Island whose reckless behavior forces him to reevaluate his life and the troubles that await him back in Ireland. After a supporting role in the Irish-produced “Catch the Sun” (2000), Murphy played the abused son of a Depression-era father (Colm Meaney) hell-bent on ruining the life of a local Irish businessman (Adrian Dunbar).

Murphy got his big break in “28 Days Later” (2002), Danny Boyle’s sci-fi horror feature about a virus released by monkeys that drives people into a homicidal rage and nearly wipes out the British population. Playing a bicycle courier who awakens in hospital after the virus has spread, he joins a couple survivors and seeks a group of soldiers with answers to the infection. “28 Days Later” went on to become the surprise hit of the summer and the most talked about movie of 2002. Meanwhile, Murphy was offered bigger and better roles thanks to the exposure from “28 Days Later.” He was a peasant boy who romances a young girl (Scarlett Johansson) who‘s the subject of Johannes Vermeer’s famous painting in “The Girl With the Pearl Earring” (2003). After playing a deserting soldier in “Cold Mountain” (2003), he appeared in “Intermission” (2004) as a sorry sod whose trial breakup with his girlfriend (Kelly MacDonald) leads him to eagerly participate in a robbery that leads to disaster.

Meanwhile, his theater career continued unabated with a turn as the emotionally fragile Konstantin in Anton Chekhov’s “The Seagull,” staged at King’s Theatre in Edinburgh. Murphy was propelled into the limelight after appearing as Dr. Jonathan Crane (a.k.a. Scarecrow) in Christopher Nolan’s excellent “Batman Begins” (2005), a return to form—and then some—for the series after the debacle of Joel Schumacher. Murphy--who was considered to play Batman/Bruce Wayne—turned in an appropriately creepy and magnetic turn as the fearsome Scarecrow, adding a bit of much-needed zaniness to the serious proceedings. He quickly followed up with the engaging Wes Craven-directed thriller "Red Eye" (2005), playing the not-so-subtly named Jackson Ripner, a mysterious man who menaces a resourceful hotel employee (Rachel McAdams) during a red-eye flight, forcing her to switch the room of a political figure marked for assassination in exchange for her father's life. The actor proved both a charismatic leading man and a fearsome villain, never allowing his performance to descend into camp.

He then returned to Ireland to star in Neil Jordan’s “Breakfast on Pluto” (2005), playing transvestite Patrick “Kitten” Braden, an aspiring model turned prostitute and IRA bomber. Murphy called the role “to die for” because of the strange story and lack of genre restrictions. Murphy then returned to his native Ireland during summer 2005 to film “The Wind That Shakes the Barley,” a period drama set during the Irish Civil War in 1919 in which he played one of two brothers who join the guerillas to fight the British Black and Tan squads trying to prevent their country from gaining independence.

Tutto per Ren [SM=g27828]

Collins, Michael (1890-1922), Irish patriot and soldier, born in Clonakilty. From 1906 to 1916 Collins worked as a clerk in London, where he joined the Irish Republican Brotherhood, a revolutionary group working for Irish independence from British rule. He participated in the Easter rebellion of 1916 in Dublin and was captured and was interned at Frongoch (Wales), where he emerged as the natural leader of the prisoners.. After his release he became one of the chief workers for Irish freedom as a leader in the Sinn Féin movement. In 1918 he was again arrested. Later, in spite of persistent attempts to capture him, he eluded the police and helped colleagues to escape. While still a fugitive, he was elected to the Sinn Féin revolutionary parliament and served as finance minister. From 1919 to 1921 Collins organised the guerrilla warfare that succeeded in forcing Great Britain to sue for peace.

After de Valera left for America (June 1919) on an 18 month fund raising tour, Collins became the dominant figure in the revolution (although Cathal Brugha, the IRA's Commander-in-Chief, disliked him intensely). At various times, Collins held positions as (1) President of the Supreme Council of the IRB, (2) A leader, but not Commander-in-Chief of the IRA, (3) Sinn Féin member of the Dail, (4) Commander-in-Chief of the Free State Army, (5) Minister of Finance in the 1919 Provisional Government of the RoI, and (6) Cabinet member in the first post-treaty government. He is best know for his brilliant work during the Anglo-Irish war in setting up the IRA's extremely effective intelligence and counter-intelligence unit that time and time again saved the IRA forces to fight another day. He and Griffith were the leaders of the team that negotiated the treaty that gave near independence to the 26 counties, while partitioning off 6 counties. During the post-treaty war, he was ambushed and killed by anti-treaty guerillas. Had he lived, he certainly would have competed with de Valera for political dominance in the Irish state.

Sultans of Ping

Founded in 1989, and split up by 1997, the Sultan's reunited late in 2005 for a series of gigs through out Ireland and the UK. The band was supported by Les Carter's (Fruitbat formerly of Carter USM) band iDou. They have also played some more gigs in Southampton, Manchester and London in March 2006. They are due to play festivals in Berlin and Cork in Summer 2006.

The original band line up was Morty McCarthy (Drums), John McAuliffe(Bass), Pat O'Connell (Guitar), Niall O'Flaherty (Vocals and Harmonica). John McAuliffe left the group in 1990 to be replaced by Alan McFeely. Later Sammy Steigers (Guitar) joined. In the more recent reformation however, Ian Olney joined the group on bass, having formerly played with the Power of Dreams and Morty McCarthy's post-Sultans band, Pharmacy.

Most noted for their art pop song "Where's Me Jumper?", the Sultans saw some cult status fame in Ireland, the UK, Japan, and Sweden, but they never quite caught on in other countries including the USA. Rock stars have begun surfacing, listing The Sultans Of Ping as their direct influence. The most recent hailing the band are rocker funny boys, Art Brut.

Likely owing to comparisons drawn between the bands name and a Dire Straits song title, the band are sometimes mistakenly confused for a tribute band. (However, this is not the case). The band was invited to tour with punk rock legends, The Ramones.

Jeremia O'Donovan Rossa

Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa (1831-1915), an Irish Fenian leader, was born at Rosscarbery, County Cork. In 1858 Rossa established the Phoenix Society which would later evolve into the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB). He was jailed numerous times for connections with the Fenian movement, and was finally exiled in 1871, sailing to the United States on board the Cuba with his friend John Devoy and three other exiles. Together they were dubbed The Cuba Five.

From New York City Rossa organised the first ever bombings by Irish republicans of English cities in what was called the "dynamite campaign". The campaign lasted through the 1880's and made him infamous in Great Britain. The British government demanded his extradition, to no effect. But it did cause a rift in the Irish independence movement itself, as many disavowed his tactics.

In 1885, Rossa was shot outside his office near Broadway by an Englishwoman, Yseult Dudley, but his wounds were not life-threatening. The British government claimed she was mentally unstable, and not acting on their behalf, although Rossa's supporters and even many of his detractors found this hard to believe. More likely, she was incensed at the fund he organised (the so-called "Skirmishing Fund") which was intended to support the arming of those who would fight the British (see[1]).

Rossa was allowed to visit Ireland in 1894, and again in 1904. On the latter visit, he was made a "Freeman of the City of Cork". Rossa was seriously ill in his later years, and was finally confined to a hospital bed in St. Vincent's Hospital, Staten Island, where he died on June 29, 1915 at the age of 84.

The new Republican Movement in Ireland was quick to realize the propaganda value of the old Fenian's death, and the Irish Republican Thomas Clarke cabled to John Devoy: SEND HIS BODY HOME AT ONCE.

His body was returned to Ireland for burial and a hero's welcome. He was survived by his wife, Mary (aka Molly). His descendants still live in Staten Island, including a local politician named Jerome X. O'Donovan, who served on the New York City Council.

The funeral at Glasnevin Cemetery on August 1 was a huge affair, garnering substantial publicity for the Irish Volunteers and the IRB at the time when a rebellion (later to emerge as the Easter Rising) was being planned. The eulogy, given by Patrick Pearse, remains one of the most famous speeches of the Irish independence movement. It ended with the lines: "They think that they have pacified Ireland. They think that they have purchased half of us and intimidated the other half. They think that they have foreseen everything, think that they have provided against everything; but, the fools, the fools, the fools! — They have left us our Fenian dead, and while Ireland holds these graves, Ireland unfree shall never be at peace."

A memorial to O'Donovan Rossa stands in St. Stephen's Green, and a bridge over the Liffey River was renamed in his honour. A park in Skibbereen is also named for him.

Terence MacSwiney
Continuiamo coi ribelli [SM=g27828]

Terence MacSwiney - scrittore e patriota, morto in seguito al più lungo sciopero della fame dell'Irlanda, ben 74 giorni.

Terence Joseph MacSwiney (Irish: Traolach Mac Suibhne) (1879 - October 25, 1920) was born in Cork City, County Cork Ireland. He was educated as an accountant and also was a writer of plays, poetry, and pamphlets of Irish history. He was also the publisher of a weekly paper called Fianna Fáil, meaning Soldiers of Destiny. However, the paper was suppressed after only 11 issues.

MacSwiney founded the Cork Brigade of the Irish Volunteers in 1913, and was President of the Cork branch of Sinn Féin. In April 1916, MacSwiney was interned under the Defence of the Realm Act in Reading and Wakefield Gaols until December 1916. In February 1917 he was deported from Ireland and interned in Shrewsbury and Bromyard internment camps until his release in June 1917. In November 1917, he was arrested in Cork for wearing an IRA uniform, and went on a hunger strike for 3 days prior to his release.

In the December elections 1918, MacSwiney was returned unopposed to the first Dail as Sinn Féin representative for Mid-Cork, succeeding the Nationalist M.P. D.D. Sheehan. After the murder of Tomás Mac Curtain, the then Lord Mayor of Cork on March 20, 1920, he was elected Lord Mayor of Cork. On August 12, 1920, he was arrested in Dublin for possession of seditious articles and documents, and also possession of a cipher key. He was summarily tried by court martial on August 16, sentenced to two years imprisonment in Brixton Prison. In prison, he immediately started a hunger strike. On October 20, 1920, he fell into a coma and died five days later after 74 days on hunger strike, making his the longest hunger strike in Irish history.

MacSwiney’s hungerstrike gained world attention. The British government was threatened with a boycott of British goods by North America, while four countries in South America appealed to the Pope to intervene. Protests were held in Germany and France as well. A young Ho Chi Minh, then a dishwasher in London, said of MacSwiney, “A nation which has such citizens will never surrender.” [citation needed]

His body was returned to Ireland for burial and his funeral on November 1 attracted huge crowds. Terence MacSwiney is buried in Saint Finbarr's Cemetery in Cork. His book entitled Principles of Freedom was published posthumously in 1921. It was based upon articles MacSwiney contributed to Irish Freedom during 1911 - 1912.

Un po' di nomi.

Rory Gallagher, il famoso musicista. Non è nato a Cork ma credo ci abbia sempre vissuto e ci sia morto.

George Boole, matematico inventore dell'algebra booleana.

Ahern was born in Drumcondra, Dublin into a traditional republican family. His father Con, a native of County Cork, had seen active service during the War of Independence, the Civil War and had been a supporter of Éamon de Valera and the Anti-Treaty IRA. His mother, Julia, was also a native of the Rebel County
