Chomsky Granted Entry
By Mairead Carey
THE Irish government put aside its differences with U.S. academic Noam Chomsky this week, allowing him to enter Ireland on an out of date passport despite reports that the anti-war campaigner described the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern as a “shoeshine boy” for George Bush.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern intervened to ensure that controversial professor was able to travel to Ireland to give a series of lectures criticizing U.S. foreign policy in Iraq.
As Chomsky was about to depart for Ireland, he discovered that his passport was out of date, and as Monday was a public holiday in the U.S. he did not expect to be able to sort out the difficulty in time for his first lecture in University College Dublin.
But on hearing of his difficulties, Dermot Ahern waived the requirement for an up-to-date passport and allowed him to travel.
On Tuesday an official from the Department of Foreign Affairs, quipped that the gesture showed that the minister was “fearlessly on the side of free speech. We do all sorts of charity work here, you know.”
It is not clear if the Americans will be so charitable and allow him to return home without a new passport.
Chomsky, who was recently voted the world’s greatest intellectual, was due to kick of a series of lectures at UCD on Tuesday night. The subject was “Democracy Promotion: Reflections on Intellectuals and the State.”
But the biggest turnout is expected on Wednesday when he gives a lecture at the RDS in Dublin, sponsored by Amnesty International, as 2,000 people will attend the gig. There are 3,000 names on the waiting list.

ma a sentirlo all'ucd nnon ci e' andato nessuno? nemmeno tu ilaria?
