Ten-year-old Amy O'Neill (above) from Tallaght, Dublin, yesterday laid a wreath at the memorial to the journalist Veronica Guerin near the site where she was shot dead 10 years ago.
The anniversary of the crime reporter's death was marked last night with the observation of a minute's silence at the scene of the daylight murder on Dublin's Naas Road. Ten years ago, as Ms Guerin sat in her car at a traffic light near Newland's Cross, she was shot by a pillion passenger on a motorbike.
She had been mounting a high-profile campaign against Ireland's drug barons in the Sunday Independent newspaper.
About 100 people gathered at the memorial last night and Liz Cafolla from Tallaght gave a reading.
Ms Guerin's family expressed thanks to those who joined the service to remember her. In a message the reporter's mother, Bernie, said the tribute was gratefully appreciated. "We wish to express our gratitude and appreciation to those who have gathered here this evening," the family said. "We thank the parks department of the council for the way they have maintained and cared for this monument. Also we thank those who visit this place to pay their respects to Veronica and lay flowers."
