The local goverment is that the local council. one of 27 in N.Ireland is elected every four years by a system of single transferable vote or as it is sometime known as, proportional representation.
The council consists of 30 members, who then elect a Mayor, in Derry City Council. the Mayor changes each year to a different party on the council: This method of election is known as the De Hunte system, however not all councils operate this system in N.Ireland
There is a nationalist majority on the local council the parties are:

D.U.P.(3)
U.U.P.(1)
IND.NAT.(1).
The official name of the city is Londonderry, since 1613.
In 1984 the council changed to Derry City Council and recently asked the U.K goverment to allow the city to be officially known as Derry.
There has been no responce to this request and the council have had legal advice that the change of the council name has legaly changed the name of the city to Derry. This year the council has asked for a judicial review of this decision, as to wether or not the change would have legal standing.
In the 2001 census the population of the city is just under 110,000, 70% Catholic, 30% Protestant. the Waterside east bank is almost 50% Catholic/Protestant, on the city side west bank the figure is 96% Catholic, 4% Protestant
