Calling time on the boozy Irish . . . now we're drinking less

THE Irish are going on the dry. New statistics reveal we are now drinking less than at any time in the last 10 years.

But the drop in our boozing habits may have more to do with the smoking ban, the clamp down on drink/driving and getting older than a conversion to a healthier lifestyle.

We guzzled our way through almost 15 litres of alcohol for every adult in the country in 2001, but last year this dropped by 6.7pc to 13.4 litres.

The drinks industry now believes that our alcohol consumption has now peaked and will continue to decline as teenagers mature and drink less as they get older. But before we go out for a celebratory pint to toast our new-found maturity, more sobering statistics have emerged from the UK Institute of Alcohol Studies which show that the Irish spend a higher proportion of their income on drink than any other country in the EU. We spend 10 times more on drink than the Greeks do, and even allowing for our punitive excise duties, spending on alcohol in Ireland runs at €1,675 a year per adult compared with €571 spent by the Danes.

According to the UK Institute, Irish people are the biggest binge-drinkers in the EU.

Even with the smoking ban which has been in force for three years now, the Irish still buy 70pc of their drink in pubs and in restaurants.

But Michael Patten, Chairman of the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland (DIGI) said alcohol consumption had peaked and our drinking levels have been declining slowly since 2001.

Out-of-date statistics should not be used when it comes to policy-making, Mr Patten said.

The figures for the decline are contained within a study by Anthony Foley of the Business School of Dublin City University (DCU) which found a 6.7pc reduction in the amount of alcohol consumed per adult between 2001 and 2006.

Altre statistiche sul sito di www.alcoholactionireland.ie/

A recent study showed that adults in Ireland had the highest reported consumption per drinker and the highest level of binge drinking in comparison to adults in other European countries.

Because Ireland has higher than average abstention rates, consumption per drinker is therefore higher (at 12.1 litres) than all other ECAS countries.

Alcohol consumption in Ireland peaked in 2001 at 14.4 litres of pure alcohol per adult, aged 15 years and over. Irish adults are currently among the highest consumers of alcohol in Europe, at 14.2 litres per adult (STFA, 2002).

Non credo sia questa la ragione, le pinte sono più care da noi o in altri paesi (a Parigi non si scende sotto i 7-8 euro), trovo invece più probabile la spiegazione collegata all'innalzamento dell'età media...

Big drop in alcohol sales - drinks body

An analysis carried out by the drinks industry has shown a 'very significant' drop in alcohol consumption so far this year.

The Drinks Industry Group of Ireland (DIGI) said excise receipts from Revenue showed that alcohol sales in the first eight months of 2008 were down 7% on the same period last year. For the month of August, sales were down 14% compared with August last year.

DIGI chairman Michael Patten said that, on the basis of these figures, there was likely to be a drop in consumption of 8% or more this year. This is more than the decline over the previous six years combined. The decline in overall consumption was spread across the on-trade (pubs and restaurants) and off-trade (off-licences and supermarkets).

Mr Patten said the industry was under pressure from a weakening economy and higher costs.
