Paisley and Ahern shake hands publicly for first time

DUP leader Ian Paisley has publicly shaken hands with the Taoiseach for the first time as optimism about the restoration of devolution in the North continues to grow.
The historic event happened ahead of informal talks between the two men in Dublin today ahead of the planned restoration of power-sharing at Stormont on May 8th.

The handshake is another sign of the speedy progress being made in the North since last month's Assembly election.

Today's talks at Farmleigh House are focusing on North-South co-operation and the Irish Government's promise to fund development projects in the North following the restoration of devolution.
