Six-month wait likely for clean water in the west
RESIDENTS of Galway may have to wait until next September before a supply of clean water is available.
It will take six months for the contaminated water flowing from the old Terryland waterworks in the city to be fully replaced by treated water from Tuam. Unless an immediate solution is found to the contamination, it will be at least September before householders can stop boiling water to kill the bug in their taps.
At the first city council meeting since the crisis broke in mid-March, city manager Joe McGrath last night defended the handling of the water crisis by his officials. Mr McGrath described it as the most challenging issue ever faced by the local authority.
The old Terryland plant supplies about 30pc of the city's water, but is incapable of filtering out the parasite causing the tummy bug. Once the additional supply from Tuam is up and running, Terryland will be phased out.
The Mayor of Galway, Cllr Niall O Brolchain, yesterday travelled to Oughterard to inspect the local sewage treatment station amid suspicions that it was a major source of the contaminated water which has left hundreds of people suffering from a severe gastro-intestinal bug. The Green Party mayor said it had been confirmed that water flowing from the plant into Lough Corrib contained nearly 60 times the safe limit of cryptosporidium pollution. Access
When he arrived at the Oughterard plant, Cllr O Brolchain was unable to gain access, but inspected the outfall from a distance.
"The Oughterard plant is a disgrace. Treated effluent from the sewerage works flows into Lough Corrib and then feeds the water treatment plant that supplies Galway city.
"The facility at Oughterard is totally unfit for the purpose."
He called on the county council to introduce a mobile filtration device.
The Director of Water Services at Galway Co Council, Jim Cullen, rejected Cllr O Brolchain's claims, however, and insisted that there was no evidence that the Oughterard plant was responsible for the outbreak of the bug.
