parafrasando una vecchia canzone di Ivano Fossati ecco
un'articolo che mi é stato mandato all'interno di una newsletter sull'immigrazione irish in argentina

    AN IRISH-ARGENTINIAN by Henry Ennis
    ====================

I'm writing to you from Buenos Aires city,
    Argentina, South America.

I'm an Irish citizen, born in the Pampas and very
proud of having the Irish citizenship. I'd like
to tell you about my family history. My
    grandparents and great-grandparents left Ireland
for USA in 1864. On account of the great violence
at that time they went back to Ireland. A short
time later they sold out their property and
decided to travel to the Rio de La Plata area
where their future promised to be better, but
they had to put up with the different language
    and customs.

As usually occurs with immigrants in the whole
world they were cheated but they managed to
overcome difficulties working hard and making
great sacrifices. They joined other people from
Eire and they settled down starting new cities
and towns. In Buenos Aires province you can find
many cities that have Irish names and you can
also find many ranches - 'estancias', whose
names are closely connected to the green emerald
    isle.

They lived isolated from the other inhabitants
trying to maintain their language and customs in
a very desolate surrounding. Something quite
noteworthy is that the English spoken here has
a great number of obsolete expressions used 130
years ago, and many times the English language
spoken is a literate translation from Gaelic.
On account of this immigration about 5000 Irish
people landed on these shores, that's why
Argentina has the biggest number of people from
Irish origin, of course not counting the English
speaking countries. The Irish have contributed a
lot to farming and animal husbandry and to the
country's prestige. It has been so important that
the high classes have accepted the Irish names
and so they have intertwined. There's more to
this, thanks to my uncle Dr Hubert Ennis, who at
the time was the legal advisor to the government,
his partner Dr J. Richards, my father and some
of their friends managed to make Argentina the
first nation in the world to recognize the
    Republic of Ireland!

But this pride ends here. Because of bureaucratic
matters introduced by politicians I can't
transmit my citizenship to my wife or children.
I became a citizen after getting married and
having children. That's why my pride ends in
myself. Nevertheless my children have been brought
up following the Irish tradition, and to my
personal satisfaction they can play Irish music
    and even step dance.

There is an embassy in Argentina, very few in the
staff and so very poor performance. I never get
any information about events nor promotions. My
personal impression is as if there were no
diplomatic representation. There is one Irish
Senator whom I've never met and I don't know what
party he belongs to, whose name is Joe O'Toole,
he gets in touch with me every now and then.
Thanks Senator O'Toole for regarding me as a
    citizen.

    Henry Ennis

Edmundo Murray, Devenir irlandés: Narrativas íntimas de la emigración irlandesa a la Argentina. 1844-1912
    Buenos Aires, Eudeba, 2004

Reseña publicada por The Southern Cross, No. 5888, Mayo 2004, Año 129

Ferguson, William Owens (1800-1828), army officer in the South American wars of independence, was born in Ballinderry, County Antrim, the eldest son of John Ferguson (d. 1845), from a family of linen drapers in Belfast, and his wife Agnes, née Knox (d. 1861). Their other children were John Ferguson (d. 1868), the poet, antiquarian and president of Royal Irish Academy Samuel Ferguson (1810-1886), Hester Ferguson, who married Archibald Macelkeran, Mary Eliza Ferguson, who married John Cowan, and Ellen Ferguson (d. 1841), who married William Haughton. The family were descendants of Scottish Presbyterian immigrants who settled in Ulster.
According to Ferguson's own account, in his formative years he was 'headstrong and difficult' (Journal). After getting into financial difficulties, he was sent to South America on a commission in Simón Bolívar's army in 1818.
During his short yet eventful life, William Ferguson stood out as an intelligent and intrepid officer, and Simón Bolívar entrusted him with important responsibilities. He joined the South American army on 4 November 1818 as second lieutenant, was promoted to lieutenant on 2 September 1819, to captain on 1 January 1820, to lieutenant-colonel on 9 December 1824 and to colonel on 15 March 1828. Ferguson served in the Battalion of Rifles of the Guards, in the Staff of the North, the Battalion Voltigeurs of the Guards and in the Staff of General Simón Bolívar.
William Ferguson participated in the campaign of 1819 in the lower Apure and was present at the action of Camarra. He also saw action in the campaign of the East against Cumana. He was taken prisoner by the Spaniards at sea and carried to Puerto Cabello where he was imprisoned for four months. He embarked on the war schooner Admiral Brown and was present at a naval action.
Ferguson commanded the troops who landed on the island of Puerto Rico. He joined the expedition in Margarita as aide-de-camp to the commandant general, Colonel Mariano Montilla. He served in the entire campaign of Río Hacha, was present in the actions of Fonseca, San Juan, Molinos, Gurumito, Moreno and the general actions of Río Hacha. He served in the campaign of the Magdalena and was present at the taking of the Fort of Savanilla. With his company, Ferguson fought and entirely routed the enemy's vanguard in Pueblo Nuevo. Ferguson participated in both surprise attacks at Turbaso and fought for eight months during the siege of Cartagena.

vi segnalo il divertentissimo blog di un irlandese giramondo finito in Argentina

    ecco alcuni brani

Truth be told, I'm not much of a sportsman or a trivia buff. I play a mean game of 8 ball pool when the mood strikes and at times I can play Texas Hold'em poker like a pro. However, I struggle with golf, gym, jogging and most physical exercise bores the crap out of me. I forget people names 20 seconds after meeting them. Most people don't consider any of those 'real' sports or useful qualities anyway.

My cousin whacked me with a hurley in the face at an early age and knocked a tooth thru my cheek flesh and I needed 6 stitches to patch the damage. I reckon that must have been what turned me off sport. It might have been a wisdom tooth knocked out, which probably explains the memory lapses too.
