Goods news on Thompson
Stephen Sullivan
There was good news tonight from the Lincoln Field in Philadelphia, with Martin O’Neill confirming that Alan Thompson’s injury is not as serious as was first feared.
Thompson was stretchered from the field in agony just five minutes into the 2-1 victory over Manchester United following a reckless over-the-ball tackle from Christopher Eagles and, judging from the reaction of his team-mates and subsequent TV replays, it was widely suspected that ligament damage has been inflicted.
In fact, while the midfielder did receive five stitches to a wound just below his right knee and is considered doubtful for the club's opening Scottish Premierleague match against Motherwell, the injury is relatively superficial and unlikely to keep him out for any significant length of time.
Meanwhile, in another positive and extremely welcome development, O’Neill revealed after tonight’s match that he had received “good news” on the health of his wife, Geraldine, prior to travelling to the US earlier this afternoon.
