Traditional Irish Welcome is Alive and Well – Minister O’Donoghue
Ryder Cup Marshal receives Special Welcome Award
Stella Lynch from Mullingar, Co Westmeath was today announced as the national winner of the fifth Fáilte Ireland Irish Welcome Awards, presented by the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, Mr John O’Donoghue TD, at a ceremony in Dublin.
Stella Lynch, owner of Just Books in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath was nominated for the award by Michael Williams from England following her extraordinary kindness to him. Michael was travelling around Europe during the summer with his dog and was finding it particularly difficult to find accommodation that would allow his dog to stay with him. After a chance meeting with Stella in her bookshop Stella tried to help find accommodation that was pet friendly. Unfortunately this didn’t work out and so Stella put him up for the night. She even organised a welcome barbecue and had her brother take him to his first hurling match. Describing events Mr Williams said, "Stella exemplifies raw hospitality. She went out of her way to help us find a room for the night and then went an extra mile to make my stay more memorable and to help me make a new friend."
The awards recognise individuals who make an outstanding addition to someone’s holiday in Ireland. This year 4,500 people were nominated by visitors from 55 different countries - a 50% increase on 2005.
Speaking at the awards ceremony Minister, John O'Donoghue T.D. said; "Ireland can be truly proud of its long tradition of hospitality and the importance this places on extending a warm welcome to the visitor. The experience of the thousands of visitors who made nominations in this year’s Irish Welcome Awards bears testimony to the fact that this great tradition remains strong in the 21st Century. Interacting with Irish people is among the top three reasons why visitors spend a holiday in Ireland and the most recent Fáilte Ireland research indicates that nine out of ten overseas visitors said that friendly and hospitable people were an important factor in choosing an Irish holiday."
Aidan Pender, Director of Enterprise and Skills Development, Fáilte Ireland said; "We are delighted with such a strong response to this year’s awards. I think the significant increase shows that the traditional Irish Welcome is alive and well across the country and it is impacting our visitors in a very positive way. Tourism represents five percent of the Irish economy and is an industry sector that reaches into every parish in the country. For many years, our own research has told us that, for our visitors, a key ingredient in the Irish tourism product is the expectation of a warm and welcoming people. This is something that cannot be faked."
Nominations
More than one-quarter of nominations were received from US visitors to Ireland, followed by the UK, Germany, France, Australia and Canada. Irish people made over 600 nominations – a marker of the importance of domestic tourism. The South-West and Dublin fared particularly strongly in the nominations.
Ryder Cup
Fáilte Ireland marked Ryder Cup 2006, the largest sporting event ever to come to Ireland, with a special Ryder Cup Welcome Award for David O’Hora, Chief Marshal. It created an opportunity to stage a sporting festival of which we can be proud and also to showcase the Irish welcome. Mr O’Hora had a daunting job, managing more than 800 volunteers and co-ordinating with Ryder Cup management. He made sure all of his volunteers were looked after, that they could carry out their assignments and fulfil duties at the highest level and with pride, with diplomacy and with a grand sense of humour! He even organised for his nominator Ms Crocker of Winchester, UK to play golf on the Palmer Course of the K-Club, a very special honour and a very special ending to her two weeks in Ireland.
