Stephen Rea nasce a Belfast il 31 ottobre 1946, in una famiglia nazionalista. E' laureato alla Queen University di Belfast.
Ha prestato la propria voce ai membri dello Sinn Fein durante il "broadcasting ban" della BBC, voluto da Margareth Thatcher, quando non era permesso far ascoltare le voci dei parlamentari repubblicani in televisione.
Ha studiato alla Abbey Theatre School di Dublino. Per il film The Crying Game è stato nominato agli Oscar del cinema. Ha collaborato spesso con il regista Neil Jordan.
Per il contributo fornito al teatro irlandese, ha ricevuto la laurea onoraria sia dalla Queen's University di Belfast che dall'University of Ulster nel 2004.
