“I am shocked and appalled by what early reports are suggesting is the vicious slaying of Denis Donaldson.
We were told at the time it was revealed that Mr Donaldson was an informant within republican ranks that he was lucky that he was living in the so-called new dispensation or else he would have ended up dead along the side of a road. Some even attempted to make a virtue out of the fact that Denis Donaldson was only interviewed about his work for British intelligence instead of being executed. Mr Donaldson is now dead. This awful act serves to highlight how anyone who falls foul of the Provisional IRA either ends up exiled abroad or dead.
The rush by Gerry Adams to absolve Sinn Fein/IRA of responsibility is a sign of great nervousness. Unionists will not be fooled into accepting the denials of Gerry Adams, a man who would still have us believe that the IRA had nothing to do with the Northern Bank robbery and denies himself ever having been a member of the IRA. People will demand explanations and answers from more credible sources than the Sinn Fein President.
People will not be impressed either by any Government attempts to protect Sinn Fein. Efforts to fabricate divisions between IRA individuals and the IRA as an organisation will not wash.
Unionists will not be fooled as easily as either republicans or Governments might think. Unionists bore the brunt of vicious IRA terror and they know the republican movement’s terror when they see it. Attempts to whitewash this atrocity by fixing blame on so-called dissidents or renegades will not work. Unionists do not accept divisions between good and bad IRA terrorists. Weasel words of condemnation from Gerry Adams come easily now but this is the man who refused ever to condemn the murder of a policeman or a soldier and whose terror machine, the IRA, continues in existence as evidenced by its latest proclamation tonight."
