Lennon, la prima icona uccisa dalla sua stessa fama

Suggeriva di immaginare l'impossibile. Solo così, pensava, potremmo farlo avverare. Difficilmente però avrà ipotizzato di aprire un baratro nella cultura pop dell'altro secolo: diventare la prima icona uccisa dalla sua stessa fama.

Prima di Lennon, la musica non aveva ancora prodotto morti violente. Era accaduto solo al povero Sam Cooke, ma quella era una storia diversa: il cantante era stato ucciso in una stanza di un motel in circostanze torbide, mentre cercava di avere rapporti sessuali con una ragazza appena conosciuta e non consenziente. Lennon è stato ucciso da un fan. Perché fino a quel momento uscire dal Dakota Building di New York, firmare autografi e parlare con gli sconosciuti non era una pratica pericolosa.

Mark Chapman, il suo assassino, ha finito lo sporco lavoro iniziato da Charles Manson nell'agosto del 1969. Ha fatto a pezzi il sogno pacifista, rendendo insicura la vita di chi mette la sua arte al servizio del mondo e facendo arricchire le agenzie di security di mezzo mondo. Se fossero stati vivi, anche Dante Alighieri o Picasso sarebbero stati costretti a girare con le guardie del corpo.

Lennon è caduto davanti all'ingresso del Dakota Building sparpagliando le prove di stampa della canzone "Walking On Thin Ice". Fine dell'età dell'innocenza: stanno per arrivare concerti negli stadi, Mtv, megaeventi in diretta mondiale, musica da consumare. Benvenuti negli anni Ottanta.
