Diageo Plc, the world's biggest liquor company, said it plans to acquire a 73-acre site in Kildare, Ireland, as the location for its new Guinness brewery.

The site at Leixlip, Co. Kildare, is 14 kilometers from Guinness's iconic St. James's Gate brewery in Dublin, the company said in an e-mailed statement today. Diageo didn't disclose the cost of the purchase, though the acquisition forms part of a 520 million-pound ($910 million) investment program.

Diageo said in May it planned to build a new Guinness brewery on Dublin's outskirts, increasing capacity to meet demand for the stout abroad, and sell half the land at its site in the Irish capital, where production started 250 years ago.

About 23 acres of the Leixlip site will be purchased subject to local government approval and construction work will begin subject to standard due diligence, Diageo said.
