McCartneys to make appeal on first anniversary

January 31, 2006 09[SM=x145457]3

Relatives of the murdered Belfast man Robert McCartney are to make a fresh appeal for information this morning on the first anniversary of his killing.

He was stabbed to death outside Magennis's bar near Belfast city centre.

Two men have been charged in connection with the incident, one of whom denies a charge of murder.

But Mr McCartney's sisters and fiancée claimed up to 15 people were involved and accused the IRA and Sinn Féin of shielding the killers.

Those accusations last year caused a crisis in the republican movement.

As the McCartneys extended their high profile campaign for justice internationally, the pressure was turned on Sinn Féin and the IRA at an important stage of the political process.

Speaking to RTÉ Radio, Paula McCartney said a wall of silence around the killing was still in place.

She said they had not been shown the results of internal investigations carried out by Sinn Féin and the IRA and asked why these could not be passed on.
