Ex-Celtic captain Lennon linked with Hibs job

    tribalfooball.com - December 21, 2007

Former Celtic captain Neil Lennon is being linked with the vacant manager's job at Hibs.
The Guardian says Lennon is among the leading candidates to replace John Collins at Hibernian after the latter's dramatic and surprising resignation.

Lennon, the former Celtic captain now at Nottingham Forest, is keen on succeeding Collins. Billy Davies, Terry Butcher and the Falkirk manager John Hughes will also come under consideration. Tommy Craig, the assistant manager, will take charge for tomorrow's trip to Celtic.

THE Celtic fan who lost part of his foot in a freak accident in Milan has thanked a heroic friend for saving his life.

William Esdale said he was still alive because of fellow Hoops fan Harry Burns.

William met Harry on board the Saltmarket Celtic Supporters bus as they travelled to Italy earlier this month.

His trip for the Bhoys' Champions League clash against AC Milan was an early Christmas present from his kids, Danielle and Ryan.

But on his way to the San Siro stadium, he was hit by a tram.

He said: "We'd spent the morning in the city square in Milan having a laugh with other football fans and even the Italian police.

"I had only just met Harry but we got on really well and we were making our way to the stadium.

"I'd had a couple of bottles of beer but that was it. I wasn't drunk. I'd never been abroad before and really wanted to make sure I'd remember every aspect of the game.

"Harry was a couple of hundred yards ahead ofme. I heard him shout, I stumbled and fell on the tram track.

"He was there in a flash and pulled me from underneath the car.

"He took my Celtic scarf from my neck and put it in front of my face and toldme not to look down.

"I was in such pain I couldn't do anything. But Harry was there for me like a rock.

"The poor man saw how badly I was hurt.

"I still haven't seen how much of my foot is gone. All I know is that my toes are gone. They'd been scattered around the accident scene."

William, 38, who had been battling back to health from a machete attack a couple of years ago, was rushed to a hospital where medics feared he could lose his right leg.

But they partially rebuilt the mutilated foot with muscle from his back in a seven-hour operation.

He was thrilled to be given the OK to travel home to Glasgow to his mum Janette, 57, Danielle, 16, and 13-year-old son Ryan just before Christmas.

William, of Knightswood, said: "I've had so much support, even from people I didn't know existed.

"And I want to thank everyone for their efforts and messages.

"The Saltmarket supporters have been amazing. Two of the lads stayed behind to keep me company and see I was all right.

"And both teams have donated signed strips.

"John Higgins was in touch personally and is hoping to arrange a snooker tournament in the new year to raise funds and even Rod Stewart has sent his best wishes through his agent.

"But the person I owe the most gratitude to is Harry. He saved my life.

"Without him, I wouldn't be here. He's become a very good friend."

William's brother David died at the age of 12 after he fell from a tree in 1980.

Janette said: "William's been strong and he's able to keep himself going. He witnessed David die and I think he understands how lucky he's been."

Rinviato per lutto il derby di Glasgow dopo la morte di Phil O'Donnell, capitano del Motherwell ed ex Celtic.

    Fonte: BBC

Old Firm match postponed by SPL

Wednesday's Old Firm match has been postponed as a mark of respect following the death of Motherwell captain Phil O'Donnell.

O'Donnell died after collapsing during Saturday's match against Dundee United.

The Scottish Premier League decided to postpone the game following a request by O'Donnell's former club Celtic.

SPL secretary Iain Blair said: "These are never easy decisions. But we recognise that as a former player, Phil was part of Celtic's extended family."

Blair said Celtic requested for the game to be postponed on Monday morning.

"After consultation with Rangers we agreed to postpone the Old Firm fixture on 2 January," he added.

A date has yet to be set for the game to be played.

Celtic manager Gordon Strachan said several players at the club had been affected by O'Donnell's death.

"Phil's second club was probably Celtic friends-wise and the reaction, when the news came through the other day, you knew he had a lot of close friends here, that's for sure," he said.

"I don't think I've seen a reaction like that in football. We are all trying to get our heads round the fact he has got four kids and a young wife.

"It's been hard to take in. The whole weekend has become a kind of a numb feeling."

BBC Scotland football correspondent Chick Young's view

Rangers manager Walter Smith added: "It's a very difficult time for everyone, especially the lad's family.

"Our thoughts across football would go to his family first and foremost.

"I don't think you can think about playing. For those of us that are in the game, the only thing that matters is that we show a proper degree of sympathy to his family."

Motherwell's match against Hibernian and Gretna's game with St Mirren had already been postponed.

Three SPL games - Aberdeen v Inverness, Dundee Utd v Hearts and Kilmarnock v Falkirk will be played on 2 January.

SPL executive chairman Lex Gold has urged fans at those fixtures to take part in a minute's applause before kick-off.

All players will wear black armbands during those games and Gold said: "Wednesday will be a day of respect in the memory of Phil O'Donnell."

Scottish Football League operations director David Thomson told BBC Scotland there were no plans to call off SFL fixtures on 2 January.

"We've had no requests from any clubs and it's never an easy decision," he said.

Thomson also said that the SFL had requested that all clubs observe either a minute's silence or applause before kick-off.

    Boruc signs new Celtic contract

Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc has ended speculation about his future by signing a contract extension that commits him to the club until 2011.

The 27-year-old Pole, who joined Celtic in 2005, was this weekend linked with moves to both Arsenal and AC Milan.

But he told arturboruc.com: "I am very grateful to the Celtic management for putting their trust in me.

"That's why I accepted the new contract offered to me and I have extended it for three more years."

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell confirmed the deal for the player first signed from Legia Warszawa.

"Talks have been ongoing for a while and we are delighted that Artur has decided to sign," he told BBC Sport.

Celtic had themselves been linked with an interest in Major League Soccer goalkeeper of the year Brad Guzan, the 24-year-old presently with Chivas USA.

Meanwhile, according to Gazzetta Dello Sport, Milan had been in touch with Boruc's representatives to discuss a possible future deal.

Milan goalkeeper Dida has been out of sorts.

And, although Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti has insisted he trusts the Brazilian, the club have repeatedly been linked with goalkeepers in the past month.

Boruc's name figured constantly, having impressed on Champions League duty in matches against the European champions.

But veteran Milan defender Paolo Maldini insisted the club's players are right behind 34-year-old Dida and his fellow Brazilian, Ronaldo, who has struggled badly with injury this season.

"Dida and Ronaldo? I don't think that we can talk about a period of crisis for either of them," said Maldini.

    Celtic close on Mizuno transfer
    from BBC:

Celtic are looking to further strengthen their squad with the signing of Japanese midfielder Koki Mizuno.

The SPL club applied in December for a work permit for the 22-year-old J-League star and should find out within 48 hours if it has been granted.

Mizuno is out of contract with his club JEF United and is seen as one of the brightest prospects in Japan.

Mizuno does not qualify automatically for a work permit because he does not have enough international caps.

However, a panel from the Department of Employment will soon sit to make a decision.

Celtic have taken two players on trial at Lennoxtown with a view to completing a deal before the transfer window closes on 31 January.

Polish international left-back Seweryn Gancarczyk is rated at £750,000 and has played most of his career in the Ukraine with Metalist Kharkiv.

Celtic have also invited American international goalkeeper Brad Guzan to their training headquarters next week.

Guzan, 23, is valued at around £1m and has played four times for the USA.

+ Koki Mizuno from (Cen.) dal JEF United (Japan) (22anni) contratto 3 anni e 1/2
