Whalewatching

Mi sembrava ci fossero alcuni irlandiani interessati all'osservazione dei cetacei... A parte la cattiveria che basterebbe andare in una spiaggia romagnola in alta stagione , senza offendere le nostre amiche balene (ma perché scrivo queste cose? ), mi è arrivato oggi un email che vi inoltro volentieri.

Just a quick reminder that our flagship event, Whale Watch Ireland is taking place this Sunday August 3rd, between 2:00-5:00pm at a head land near you (see below).

It would be great if you could join us for the afternoon, as it's a good opportunity to meet members with similar interests. Perhaps you could help out on the day by scanning the sea, fielding questions from members of the public or assisting with crowd control? If you feel you can contribute, please contact the local organiser, at the details below or make your known on the day.

Risso's dolphins in Wicklow



Although sightings of this group of dolphins have dropped off in recent weeks, this is more likely to reflect the poor weather as of late, and the fact that the novelty of Wicklow having a resident pod of dolphins may be starting to wear off. But they have been seen as recently as July 27th, by IWDG committee members who were watching harbour porpoises in Killiney Bay and scoped the Risso's off Bray Head.

Premetto che sono andata un paio di mesi fa ad un evento di whale watch a Old Head (Kinsale) con i bambini, e dopo un'ora non si è vista neppure una pinna... io vi ho messo in guardia

...Martina per la segnalazione ...spero di esserci domenica, ovviamente a Howt.

This will be relevant to any of our southeast members in the Wexford/Waterford area .

This morning, Sunday 24th, we received a call from staff at Hook Hd. lighthouse that a large whale had been observed in outer Waterford Harbour, close to Templetown during the morning. Associated with this whale were several dolphins.

By the description of the size and the fact that the whale had a visible blow, it seems likely that this whale was a humpback or fin whale. IWDG members saw the activity from a distance from Dunmore East on the Waterford side, but I think they'd have needed scopes or to have been on the Wexford size for a better look.

This latest sighting of large whales from the area, would suggest that the humpback/fin whale activity that has previously been recorded in West Cork in recent years has stayed further East.

I gather from Colin Barnes that there will be a whale watching trip tomorrow weather permitting, Thursday morning 30th at 10:00, leaving from Reen Pier, outside Union Hall, West Cork. Colin can be contacted on 086-3273226 for booking or enquiries.
