Late Pope inspires Irish students

John Paul II's words could help students through times of stress
Students in the Irish Republic are to derive inspiration from the late Pope John Paul II by wearing wristbands featuring his words of comfort.
The Catholic Church says the bands, inscribed with his famous words "Be Not Afraid", will offer comfort during stressful periods such as exams.

Student Daniel Philbin Bowman came up with the idea after being inspired by the late pontiff's illness and death.

All proceeds from the sale of the wristbands will be given to charity.

'Empowering people'

The Archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin, offered his support to the project after being contacted by 16-year-old Daniel/

Archbishop Martin said remembering the words of John Paul II could give students comfort and hope during challenging times.

"I hope the message on the wristbands will make a difference in empowering people to take action when faced with difficult circumstances," he said.

John Paul II uttered his famous words after being elected Pope and stepping onto the balcony of Peter's Square where he said "Be not afraid! Open up, swing wide the gates to Christ.

"Open up to his saving power the confines of the state, open up economic and political systems, the vast empires of culture, civilisation and development. Be not afraid!"

The wristband are on sale for two euros each and the proceeds will be donated to the Turning the Tide of Suicide Group and the Irish Red Cross for its work in Darfur.

Personalities including Chelsea's Irish footballer Damien Duff, golfer Padraig Harrington and presenters of Irish television channel RTE Bryan Dobson and John Bowman are supporting the bands.
