Bank of Ireland expects "excellent" year

DUBLIN (Reuters) - Bank of Ireland (Dublin: BIR.IR - news) Ireland's second-biggest company, said on Tuesday it would report an excellent performance for the year to end-March and was confident that momentum would continue into the coming year.

The bank (NASDAQ: TBHS - news) said it expected 15 percent growth in underlying earnings per share for the year to end-March 2006, on the previous year's pro-forma underlying EPS -- under International Financial Reporting Standards -- of 102.3 cents.

"Group performance is being driven by the excellent execution of strategy against a backdrop of strongly performing economies," said the bank whose key markets are Ireland and Britain.

It said it expected total group income to be up by about 7 percent, driven by strong volume growth and partially offset by a margin decline of around 200 basis points.

In its Irish retail business it said it saw profit growth of around 18 percent, with its Irish life operation expected to deliver profit growth of 60 percent and operating profit growth of around 40 percent, driven by excellent new business volume.

Profit from wholesale financial services was seen rising by 15 percent.

In the UK (LSE: ATUK.L - news) , its financial services division was expected to show a profit increase of around 5 percent, the bank said.

Fund outflows from its asset management business had continued but at a slower pace, and the bank said it expected profit from the business to be down around 30 percent in line with previous guidance.

"We had a 12 percent increase pencilled in for underlying EPS so we're looking at upgrades," said John Bowe, analyst at Merrion Stockbrokers in Dublin.

"It's a very strong statement across the board."

In November, Bank of Ireland reported a 10 percent rise in underlying first-half earnings and said a positive outlook for its key British and Irish markets made it bullish.

It said then it expected double-digit earnings growth for the full year and beyond.
