GuinnessSize Me
Dir: Robert James and Chris Kelly, 2005, Ireland
74 mins, Cert: 18
On May 23rd 2005, against all medical advice, two local filmmakers decided to find out what would happen if they consumed nothing but Guinness for a week! Armed with a car full of booze the boys hurl themselves headlong into the heart of Ireland’s hedonistic drinking culture. The result is GuinnessSize Me.
Their initial enthusiasm for a week on nothing but the ‘black stuff’ soon gives way to drunken banter, unrelenting hunger pangs, in-fighting and only occasional outbursts of camaraderie.
The ancestral home of Guinness in Dublin is their first stop, as they traverse the country on their quest. Events take a turn for the worst when psychopathic killers, fights with go-go dancers and weak bladders all conspire against our heroes.
Irony is all, in the downbeat poetic narrative, punctuated by the click and hiss of beer can ring-pull. This comic fly-on-the-wall doc finally comes to the journey’s end with the starved and sodden duo wondering just exactly what they have learned from their experience.
