I was born in Dublin on the 25th of July 1985, my big sister Tamsen couldn't wait for her new baby sister to arrive and we've been close right from the start. I went to Rathdown School, Glenageary, Co. Dublin for most of my schooling, except for spending one term of each primary school year in France in the local village school in Chatel where skiing, both alpine and cross country were part of the curriculum. I spent a couple of years in the French school in Dublin when I was 11 and 12. At Rathdown there was a big emphasis on sports as well as academics, I represented Rathdown in many sporting events including at the Leinster and National finals in 800m & cross country running, I occasionally played netball and football for my school too. In the last two years of school I started to enjoy it and found most of my subjects really interesting, which always helps, so that my results in the Leaving Certificate were; French A1, Biology A1, Maths A1, German A2, Business B1, English B2, Geography C1. I won school prizes for French, Biology and Business and was offered a place in Trinity College Dublin, which I decided not to take up so that I could pursue my ski career.

26 January 2006 - I'm so honoured to be chosen to carry our flag!
I got the news today that I will be following in my sister's footsteps and carrying the Irish flag at the Olympic Opening Ceremony. It was the biggest surprise imaginable! Of course it was something on my wish list, something every Olympic competitor dreams of - but to have that dream come true is fantastic and brilliant and all the superlatives you can think of! It was possibly the biggest moment of my sister Tamsen's life, certainly one she remembers with huge pride. She has told me about the roar in the stadium as the Irish flag came in... they say there are 2 types of people on this planet, those who are Irish and those who wish they were. Well I am, and I'm seriously proud of it, and now I get the chance to show it to the World!

Kirsten McGarry, Irish Alpine Ski Racer
Dalkey, Co. Dublin.
Born into a well-known skiing family, Kirsty started skiing at 2 years old, has been competing since the age of 9 and got her international racing licence at 15. Her father, Ian, and mother, Jane, are both ski instructors, and ran a ski school in the Alps for many years. Her sister, Tamsen, was the first Irish woman ever to compete at a Winter Olympics - in Salt Lake, in 2002. She finished in the Top 40 - an achievement Kirsty hopes to emulate in Turin.
After finishing school in 2003 (with 520 points and the school prizes in French, Biology and Business) Kirsten became a full-time ski racer. Her aims for the coming season are to improve her FIS ranking, to get a first taste of the Europa Cup circuit, and to represent her nation with pride at the Winter Olympics.
Longer term aims are to race on the World Cup circuit and do well in future World Championships and Olympics.

TORINO 2006:OPERAZIONE PS CONTRO BAGARINAGGIO, 11 DENUNCE
A Torino da tutto il mondo non solo per vedere i Giochi olimpici, ma anche per fare bagarinaggio: la squadra mobile ha denunciato undici persone di varie nazionalita' e sequestrato tremila biglietti. Del "gruppo" di bagarini facevano parte due americani, quattro canadesi, un irlandese, un belga, un suddito di sua maesta' britannica, un tedesco, un messicano. L'irlandese vendeva addirittura i biglietti all'interno di un'arena cittadina dove durante la stagione estiva si proiettano film ed aveva anche stampato volantini per pubblicizzare la sua attivita'.

16 February 2006 - Preparations Going Well at Europa Cup races
Kirsten left the Olympic village to enter 2 Europa Cup races as training for the Olympic Giant Slalom. The slope in Abetone was perfect for a novice Europa Cup skier and Kirsten made the 2nd run qualification on both days - which gives a boost not only to her preparations but to her confidence for her career after the Olympics. Now back in Sestriere she will take part in training sessions and will consider the Super G, although with little background in this discipline she is perhaps unlikely to start the S.G. race in favour of focusing on her preferred disciplines of Slalom and Giant Slalom.

Il superG che doveva vederla in pista è stato cancellato per le condizioni meteo, la gara potrebbe essere recuperata domani.

in cauda venenum dicevano i Latini....

La gara comincia alle 14.45.
Lei scenderà dopo le 4... chissà che durante la gara non cambino le condizioni meteo e la pista diventi più veloce, così che gli ultimi a scendere non abbiano qualche vantaggio...

Suffering from slight cold, and receiving physio for a minor back problem -from team physiotherapist Marie Elaine Grant- Kirsten has made the wise decision not to race the Olympic Super G. The race was postponed from today due to blizzard conditions, until tomorrow the 20th, but this being the day for official free-skiing of the Slalom slope Kirsten will focus on recovering and preparing for what is one of her main events.

intanto il Kerryman Tom Foley partito col 70 di pettorale si è piazzato 31.mo nello slalom gigante...
