A Vision of You in the Night of Halloween
The top of the masts clattering
was fading the day away
and light was just the far
lost shrieking of the seagulls
hardly finding their way home
in the faintly howling wind.
A few friends to walk with
and a dog running, jingling
to and fro, for joy only.
Howth celebrating the witches
with spray fireworks and bonfires –
and us slowly heading to the sea.
I turned my head back
as the pier came to an end
and watched over the road,
beneath the yellowish lamps light –
Yourself at the DART station waiting for a train.
Wrapped in the cold wind.
There was no apple bosom on you
there was no glimmering smile on you –
only your solid awareness
of love being a beautiful flower
that cannot survive in this dark,
in this cold, soft clattering wind.
