Ieri,1 ottobre 2006,si sono svolte le finali del "Coca Cola British and Irish Kitesurfing Association",con 14 professionali e 26 amatori,e centinaia di spettatori.

Il vincitore 25enne,Ryan Coote di Wexford,ha vinto per la terza volta di fila!!

... propio oggi nei Paesi Baschi, precisamente a Mundaka ha inizio il Billabong.Pro!!!

TOW SURFERS PRONTI PER LE ONDE DEL DECENNIO IN IRLANDA

Mareggiata record in arrivo sulle coste irlandesi, le previsioni meteo segnalano onde fino a 14 metri, circa 45 piedi, per questo week end sulle coste ad ovest dell'Irlanda.
Il precedente record registrato dall'Istituto Marino Irlandese è stato di 13.4 metri il 17 gennaio 2005. Le condizioni previste per questo week end sono in tutto molto simili a quella mareggiata di quasi tre anni fa ed è stato proclamato lo stato di allerta per tutte le imbarcazioni e chiunque si trovi nei pressi della costa.
Le condizioni che generano questa configurazione sono date da una profonda bassa pressione (in questo caso 960mb) che staziona nell'Atlantico a Nord dell'Irlanda, proprio che è previsto accadere tra oggi e domani. Questa configurazione è in grado di generare onde in arrivo da una distanza considerevole.

Un gruppo di tow surfers è pronto per affrontare l'arrivo di queste onde, ritenute sulla carta tra le più grosse previste negli ultimi anni.
Il picco di swell dovrebbe verificarsi a mezzogiorno di oggi, con onde di 12,5 mt e un periodo di 18 secondi.
L'incontro di queste onde con i bassi fondali di big wave spot come Mullagmore Head e Donegal Bay dovrebbe raddoppiarne l'altezza, facendo raggiungere all'onda altezze anche di oltre 15 metri.
I quattro big wave riders pronti a surfarle sono tutti anglosassoni: Duncan Scott (Newquay, UK), Alistair Mennie (Portrush, IE), Gabe Davies (Newcastle, UK) e Ritchie Fitzgerald (Bundoran, IE.).
Gli spot prescelti, neanche a dirlo: Mullagmore Head e Donegal Bay, dove si formano le onde più grosse.

Pare che ci siano parecchi "Hard Core" surfers in tutto il mondo che tengono constantemente d'occhio le previsioni sulle coste "surfing" più popolari del pianeta (non so se avete visto Point Blank con Keanu Reeves). La scorso week-end le coste dell'Ovest irlandese hanno attratto parecchi campioni a livello mondiale.

Following the success of his previous 2003 film Eye of the Storm, Irish director Joel Conroy has returns once again to the world of international surfing. His new film Wave Riders provides both a well researched insight into the foundation of the sport and an exhilarating rollercoaster ride with some of the sports greatest exponents. The meticulous charting of the origins of the sport starts with an unexpected revelation that it was the son of an Ulsterman, George Freeth who re-introduced the ancient Polynesian art of wave riding in Hawaii at the start of the 20th century after it had been stamped out by missionaries. The film traces how Freeth went on to transform and popularise the sport in California where he became the world’s first lifeguard.

At the core of the film is the journey of a cast of top Irish and Irish American surfers as they trace an unexpected Irish connection to surfing and strive to meet the latest challenge of big wave tow surfing in Ireland. The story brings us back to Ireland where top surfer Richard Fitzgerald from Bundoran and UK surf champion, Gabe Davies, extol the virtues of relatively unexplored Irish surf destinations. They link up with world champion Kelly Slater and Irish American superstar surfers such as pioneering soul surfer Kevin Naughton and the renowned Malloy brothers to ride some of the most exciting surf Ireland has to offer north and south of the Irish border. The story climaxes with their attempt to ride a big wave off the west coast of Ireland using the newly introduced technique of tow surfing.

Lo scorso agosto invece ho fatto due lezioni a Bundoran (Co. Donegal), spesso fanno offerte per alloggio + lezioni a 120 euro per un weekend, ne vale davvero la pena...se il freddo non vi spaventa
Gli istruttori erano per lo piu' stranieri (australiani e americani) e ci hanno seguito in mare continuando a dare consigli al gruppo di noi "beginners". Dopo un 10 minuti di cadute in acqua eravamo gia' in grado di poter cavalcare qualche onda. Ve lo consiglio!
