Gardai probe link between Irish and London terror cells

A MAJOR security drive to unearth any links between Islamic extremists living here and the terror cell responsible for the London bomb blasts was intensified yesterday.

Extra gardai and army intelligence personnel were drafted into the international hunt to identify the killers as Taoiseach Bertie Ahern revealed that some of those under regular surveillance were regarded as "hugely important" by the security services.

Mr Ahern said the Government treated the terrorist threat very seriously. The Gardai worked in unison with international security agencies and Mr Ahern admitted "we do watch certain individuals very closely".

"There are people living in the Republic that we have to attach huge importance to and this week underlines that," he added. "We do that as part of international terrorism."

Sources said the members of the Middle Eastern desk in the Garda Special Branch and Army intelligence, involved in monitoring the movement of international terrorist sympathisers here, had been put on full alert.

Gardai were last night examining the activities of sympathisers here to determine if there had been contact with known terrorist supporters overseas in the days leading up to the London bomb blasts.

The gardai and the army have already been carrying out regular surveillance on the activities of a dozen or so hard-core members of groups suspected of supplying logistical support to Islamic terrorists based overseas. The suspects live mostly in the greater Dublin region. Those under surveillance here include Algerians, Libyans, Egyptians, Moroccans, Tunisians, Afghans and Pakistanis.

Meanwhile, the Taoiseach said he did not accept that the use of Shannon airport by the US military meant Ireland was exposed to a greater risk of terrorist attack.

"The American troops and troops of the alliance are going through a large number of airports every day all over Europe," he added.

"I don't think this in any way puts us in danger."
