Fury in Galway over water contamination

non bevete acqua di rubinetto a galway...

The number of people treated in hospital as a result of water contamination in Galway has reached 93.

One of the towns at the centre of the alert says it is 'extremely concerned' at the impact the problem is having on the tourist industry and the risk it continues to pose for local residents.

Hoteliers and businessmen in Headford say the situation there is 'disgraceful'.

They have reported cancellations and complaints with guests at local hotels told that such is the condition of the water that they cannot even brush their teeth.

Galway City Council and Galway County Council are continuing to carry out sampling of the water supplies and are again reiterating that it is essential that people in the affected areas to boil water intended for drinking or food preparation.

Roche frustrated over Galway water situation
The Minister for the Environment, Dick Roche, has said the issue of clean water supplies in Galway city and county has not been addressed with enough urgency.

The Minister said that he is greatly frustrated at the difficulties being experienced and said mistakes have been made.

Responding to calls for more Government funding made by Galway Mayor Niall Ó Brolcháin, Mr Roche said that €21.5m of funding has been available to improve Galway's water supply but has not yet been used.

He said no proposals to do so had been sent to the Government.

Mr Roche said he plans to bring together representatives of the council and Government bodies to see what has been done to address contamination discovered in water supplies two weeks ago.

Meanwhile, Galway householders have been told that they will need to take even greater hygiene precautions following the discovery that the waterborne cryptosporidium infection in the county can be transmitted from person to person.

The West's Chief Public Health Officer Dr Diarmuid O'Donovan said all 90,000 people in the affected area must introduce strict hand washing routines in their homes, especially where there are children and old people, to try to reduce the level of the illness which is still continuing to rise daily.

Call for urgent action

The Mayor of Galway has said the water contamination situation has now become a major crisis which needs immediate and urgent action.

Mr Ó Brolcháin said he would be putting forward a five-point action plan seeking major financial assistance from the Government and the lifting of a cap on staff numbers to speed up work on restoring safe drinking water to the city.

The mayor's efforts to 'fast-track' a solution to the crisis got off to a faltering start last night when officials and engineering staff refused to attend a hastily convened meeting in City Hall.

Councillors wanted to discuss the growing seriousness of the situation but the officials stayed away pointing out that the meeting would not on procedural grounds have any valid status.

Only 11 of the 15 members of council turned up and afterwards they issued a statement saying they were 'shocked and disappointed' that the officials did not attend.

In a separate development, Galway's vintners said they would be seeking a rebate on water charges.

They say they could not be expected to pay for contaminated water.

Fonte: Irish Independent

Six-month wait likely for clean water in the west

RESIDENTS of Galway may have to wait until next September before a supply of clean water is available.

It will take six months for the contaminated water flowing from the old Terryland waterworks in the city to be fully replaced by treated water from Tuam. Unless an immediate solution is found to the contamination, it will be at least September before householders can stop boiling water to kill the bug in their taps.

At the first city council meeting since the crisis broke in mid-March, city manager Joe McGrath last night defended the handling of the water crisis by his officials. Mr McGrath described it as the most challenging issue ever faced by the local authority.

The old Terryland plant supplies about 30pc of the city's water, but is incapable of filtering out the parasite causing the tummy bug. Once the additional supply from Tuam is up and running, Terryland will be phased out.

The Mayor of Galway, Cllr Niall O Brolchain, yesterday travelled to Oughterard to inspect the local sewage treatment station amid suspicions that it was a major source of the contaminated water which has left hundreds of people suffering from a severe gastro-intestinal bug. The Green Party mayor said it had been confirmed that water flowing from the plant into Lough Corrib contained nearly 60 times the safe limit of cryptosporidium pollution. Access

When he arrived at the Oughterard plant, Cllr O Brolchain was unable to gain access, but inspected the outfall from a distance.

"The Oughterard plant is a disgrace. Treated effluent from the sewerage works flows into Lough Corrib and then feeds the water treatment plant that supplies Galway city.

"The facility at Oughterard is totally unfit for the purpose."

He called on the county council to introduce a mobile filtration device.

The Director of Water Services at Galway Co Council, Jim Cullen, rejected Cllr O Brolchain's claims, however, and insisted that there was no evidence that the Oughterard plant was responsible for the outbreak of the bug.

Un po' di discussioni utili:
Galway
Connemara

Galway council to unveil bottled water scheme

Galway City Council is set to unveil a scheme to provide householders in the city with bottled water at reduced prices.

The scheme, to be announced tomorrow, will allow residents to purchase bottled water in some city shops at costs fixed below normal retail levels.

The city council has also requested the Department of Social and Family Affairs to initiate a voucher scheme to cater for the bottled water needs of social welfare recipients.

The number of confirmed cases of cryptosporidiosis in Galway city and county since the beginning of the year now stands at 179.

The Health Service Executive expects new analysis of confirmed cases of the illness will be available tomorrow.

So far 19 of 24 cases analysed indicate the parasite to be from human, rather than animal, sources.

Galway is the fastest growing city in Ireland, new census figures showed today.

While its residents struggle on amid a water pollution crisis, the City of the Tribes is attracting plenty of newcomers with more than 231,000 now living there.

Galway grew by just under 10% between 2002 and 2006.

Last year, there were 2.19 million people living in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Waterford accounting for 34.2% of the population - down from 35.5% four years earlier.

According to the first volume of census 2006 released by the Central Statistics Office, Ireland's population grew by 8.2% to 4,239,848 in the four years from 2002 but less than one fifth of this growth was in the cities.

Large towns of 10,000 people or more are springing up all over the country. There are now 34, six more than 2002, including Mallow, Wicklow, Arklow, Cobh, Middleton, and Ballina.

Twenty-two of them are in Leinster. Swords showed the highest growth with 6,823 moving to the area while Balbriggan grew by more than 50% - the highest percentage growth.

Unsurprisingly Dublin has the highest population density, whilst Co Leitrim still has the most open space with the least amount of people per square kilometre.

With an election just around the corner, the census figures showed a wide variation in the make-up of Dáil constituencies.

In 2006, the population per TD in constituencies ranged from 22,833 in Dun Laoghaire to 30,967 in Dublin West.

Under the Constitution and our proportional representation system there should be one TD for between 20,000 and 30,000 people in each constituency.

According to the CSO figures, calls by Independent TDs Catherine Murphy and Finian McGrath for an additional TD in the area are justified.

They claim 11 of the 43 constituencies breach article 16 of the constitution that every constituency should have, within reason, the same ratio of TDs per population.

Other facts the census recorded included the number of villages with at least 50 occupied households and with a population of less than 1,500 increased in population by 18.6% in the inter-censal period.

In the counties of Dublin, Meath, Kildare and Wicklow the population of these small villages increased by over one third while elsewhere in the state the increase in the village population was one sixth.

The population living in sparsely populated rural areas numbered 1.37 million in 2006 compared with 1.3 million in 2002 (up 5.3%).

ciao,
ciao
