Jimmy Johnstone was honoured on the Hampden turf this afternoon, ultimately in some style, as Celtic adhered firmly to the pre-match script by returning the League Cup to Jinky’s spiritual home.

Goals from Maciej Zurawski, Shaun Maloney and Dion Dublin saw Celtic stroll to the first silverware of Gordon Strachan’s reign and, with each of these strikes and the very lifting of the trophy greeted by chants of ‘Jimmy Johnstone on the wing,’ it truly was an afternoon to remember.

A UEFA inspector who is investigating allegations of discriminatory behaviour by Rangers supporters has listed 12 separate counts of offensive chanting by fans which are to be included in the governing body's prosecution of the Ibrox club.
The inspector, who works for UEFA's control and disciplinary body, is believed to have gathered damning evidence of behaviour by fans which UEFA will consider in its imminent inquiry.

All’Hampden Park di Glasgow, lo stadio nazionale, la formazione che in pratica milita nel corrispondente della Serie C italiana, ha travolto in semifinale per 3-0 il piu' quotato Dundee, che comunque e' squadra di Prima Divisione. Davanti a poco piu' di 14 mila spettatori (ma tutta Gretna insieme ne fa appena 3 mila),
E cosi', come in una favola (e assicuriamo che non si tratta di un pesce d’aprile) la piccola squadra del milionario Brooks Mileson ha realizzato il proprio sogno e ora, nella finale del secondo trofeo piu' antico del mondo dopo la Coppa d’Inghilterra, affrontera' il 13 maggio la vincente della seconda semifinale, che uscira' domenica dal derby di Edimburgo fra Hearts e Hibernian.
Un risultato che ricorda paradossalmente molto da vicino la trama di un film scozzese intitolato ‘Sfida per la vittoria’ (‘A Shot at Glory’ nel suo titolo originale) in cui una piccola squadra di provincia scozzese metteva sotto contratto una vecchia gloria del calcio locale (nel film Ally McCoist, autentico grande campione dei Rangers), per affrontare nella ‘partita della vita’ proprio i potenti Rangers Glasgow.
Autori ‘fisici’ dell’impresa vera, quella di Hampden, Kenny Deuchar, in gol al 45’, Ryan McGuffie, autore del raddoppio al 58’ su rigore e, suo malgrado, Barry Smith, che all’82’ realizzava un autogol.
Fondato nel 1946, il Gretna ha sempre militato nelle divisioni amatoriali del calcio scozzese e inglese, non essendo mai riuscito a raccogliere fondi sufficienti per l’iscrizione alla Scottish Football Association. Nel 2002, al terzo tentativo, finalmente la richiesta d’affiliazione veniva accolta. L’anno scorso il successo in Terza Divisione. Quest’anno la squadra di questo paese al confine con l’Inghilterra ha gia' ottenuto la vittoria matematica nel torneo di Seconda Divisione. Oltre naturalmente alla finalissima di Coppa di Scozia. Prossimo appuntamento la Scottish Premier League.

FORMER Northern Ireland captain Neil Lennon has told how he was forced to hide in a pal's house when cops told him that loyalist thugs planned to shoot him.

The Celtic captain has spoken in depth for the first time about the terrifying night his international career was brought to an end by an LVF death threat.

In an interview to be broadcast today on Radio Scotland he describes the moment cops arrived at his door ahead of a friendly clash with Cyprus to warn him: "Mr Lennon, if you play tonight, you could be seriously hurt."

In the four years since he walked away from international football Lennon (34) has kept quiet about the sickening threats that robbed him of the chance to wear the captain's armband.

But opening his heart for the first time he said: "I was about to captain my country at home for the first time.

"It was a great privilege and an honour. I was really looking forward to it and it was taken away."

Lurgan-born Lennon fled his home and spent a sleepless night in a pal's house.

He also recalled how it had been his big money move from Leicester City to Celtic that turned sections of the Windsor Park crowd against the midfield enforcer.

"For 35 games I didn't have any problems when I was playing for Leicester.

"Then I signed for Celtic and people booed every time I touched the ball," he recalled.

"People can play it down and say it was only a small section of the crowd, but you could hear it every time I touched the ball.

"It hurt. I was playing for their team and because of my choice of club they saw me as a symbol of something they detested."

Lennon has been the target of constant sectarian abuse since he joined Celtic in 2000. In one incident, thugs daubed a death threat in paint on the road outside his Glasgow home.

Il centrocampista del Celtic Glasgow, Didier Agathe, classe ’75 dopo essersi svincolato dal club scozzese, ha rivelato il desiderio di voler vestire la maglia della Roma, ed arriverebbe a costo zero: “Il presidente Sensi mi ha invitato ad allenarmi con la sua squadra. Purtroppo però non ho ancora recuperato totalmente dall’ultimo infortunio avuto. Andrò a Roma a fine mese. Spero di potere giocare in giallorosso, perché la Roma è il top e sarebbe bellissimo mettermi alla prova nel campionato italiano”.

CELTIC Under-19s triumph in the SFA Youth Cup on Wednesday night has capped a tremendous season for the club because it is the FIFTH trophy Celtic have won.

The first-team scooped both the League Championship and the CIS Cup, the reserves won their league for a fifth consecutive season, while the Under-19s completed a second consecutive double.

Added to that is the Manager of the Year Award to Gordon Strachan and the historic double won by Shaun Maloney – that of the Players’ Player and Young Player of the Year Award.

Celtic chairman Brian Quinn said: “Congratulations go to Willie McStay and the Under-19 squad for their victory in the Youth Cup final. It’s a tremendous achievement for them to have retained both the league and the cup.

“Their victory in the final at Celtic Park also means that of the six trophies competed for in Scottish football by Celtic, we have won five of them.

“Credit goes to everyone at the club, all the managers and coaches and the players of the respective squads.

“I know from the reception the reserve and Under-19 players received from the supporters when they were presented with their league trophies at our last home game at Celtic Park that everyone is proud of their achievements.

“And on a day when the club has announced that work is to begin on our new world class training centre and sport academy, the fact that we have won these five trophies shows that the development of the footballing infrastructure is already well underway at Celtic. (DS) - Glasgow (SCO), 13 maggio - L’Heart of Midlothian ha vinto la Coppa di Scozia superando dopo i calci di rigore il Gretna. All’Hampden park di Glasgow e' andata cosi' in scena la classica sfida tra Davide e Golia, con il ‘grande’ Hearts che ha affrontato una formazione militante in terza divisione, in pratica la nostra Serie C.
1-1 il risultato dopo i tempi regolamentari, con vantaggio della formazione di Edimburgo al 39’ realizzato da Skacel e pareggio di McGuffie al 76’, che riprende un proprio rigore respinto da Gordon. Ai rigori finisce 4-2 per gli Hearts, che vincono cosi' la propria 7.a coppa nazionale. E' la seconda volta che la coppa viene assegnata ai calci di rigore.
Il sogno del Gretna proseguira' comunque in Europa, visto che il piccolo club potra' giocare in Coppa Uefa in quanto' gli Hearts giocheranno la prossima stagione in Champions League.

A SQUAD of ten Celtic players will fly to represent the club in this year’s Hong Kong Soccer Sevens tournament.

The Celtic side, which is led by reserve team coach Kenny McDowall and his assistant Danny McGrain, flies out on Tuesday afternoon (May 16) to take part in the annual seven-a-side tournament.

This year Celtic will face PSV Eindhoven, the Hong Kong FC first team and Chinese side, Shanghai Shooters in the group stages, with Australian champions Sydney Spirit, South Africa’s Kaiser Chiefs and English sides Aston Villa, Southampton, Manchester United and Arsenal among the other clubs taking part.

However this year’s competition could also see the Glasgow derby ‘transferred’ to Hong Kong, with Rangers facing Urawa Red Diamonds, Kitchee FC and KFC Tokyo in Group One.

As always, it is a young Celtic squad who have been selected to travel to Hong Kong, with the players looking to add to the invaluable experience that they have already picked up during their title-winning reserve and Under 19 campaigns.

Travelling this year are goalkeeper Sandy Wood, defender Paul Caddis, midfielders Theodore Bjarnason, Ross Harris and Mark Millar and forwards Nicky Riley, Kjartan Finnbogason, Michael Gardyne, Diarmuid O’Carroll and Paul McGowan.

The format of the tournament makes for an intense series of games, with Celtic playing all three of their group matches on the afternoon and evening of Saturday May 20.

The top two sides from each group will then go on to face each other in the knock-out stages on Sunday May 21.

Henrik Larsson spera in una sensazionale vittoria, alla vigilia della sua ultima partita con la maglia dell’FC Barcelona nella finale della UEFA Champions League di mercoledì contro l’Arsenal allo Stade de France.

Un ultimo trofeo
Il 34enne attaccante svedese ha già vinto due titoli di Primera División nelle ultime due stagioni con lo squadrone catalano e la scorsa settimana è stato premiato con l’MBE Award per il contributo dato allo sport britannico nel corso della sua permanenza al Celtic FC. Ora spera di coronare la sua esperienza al Barcellona con un ultimo trofeo. “È stato fantastico ricevere questo riconoscimento dalle mani dell’ambasciatore inglese al Camp Nou, ma se riuscissi a vincere la Champions League mercoledì sarei ancora più felice”, ha confidato a uefa.com Larsson.

Ricordi amari
Per Larsson la finale di Parigi offre anche l’opportunità di scacciare alcuni brutti ricordi del suo periodo al Celtic, soprattutto la finale della Coppa UEFA 2002/03 persa contro l’FC Porto. A Siviglia lo svedese ebbe un ruolo da protagonista nel Celtic, segnando due volte prima che la squadra di José Mourinho vincesse per 3-2. Mentre la ferita ancora brucia, Larsson è deciso a riportare le cose a posto contro l’Arsenal.

'Voglio assolutamente vincere'
“Realizzare una doppietta senza riuscire a vincere la coppa mi ha causato una grandissima delusione – ha detto -. Ho cercato di non pensare troppo a quella partita. Ormai è successo. Spero che le cose andranno bene questa volta e voglio assolutamente vincere. So che sarà difficile contro un Arsenal molto forte, ma anche noi siamo una formazione con tutte le carte in regola”.

Un regalo al Celtic
Larsson potrebbe fare ancora una volta un grande regalo al Celtic, perché una vittoria del Barcellona proietterebbe i campioni di Scozia nella fase a gironi della UEFA champions League della prossima stagione, evitando, così, la partecipazione al terzo preliminare. Il pensiero di poter aiutare il suo vecchio club è di grande stimolo per un giocatore che ha al suo attivo 242 gol in sette stagioni a Glasgow, ma prima di ogni cosa ora pensa a vincere con i blaugrana.

Il sogno di un gol
“So bene che in caso di nostra vittoria il Celtic si qualificherebbe automaticamente – ha proseguito Larsson -. Ce la metteremo naturalmente tutta per vincere, per questo siamo qui. Sarebbe meraviglioso segnare il gol della vittoria, ma non si tratta di quello che farò io, ma di quello che potremo fare come squadra. Se dovessimo vincere senza un mio gol, nessuno sarebbe più felice di me”.

Ritorno in Svezia
Indipendentemente dal risultato, Larsson questa estate tornerà in Svezia per indossare ancora la maglia dell’Helsingborgs IF, il club dove si messo in evidenza nei primi anni ’90. L’ex leggenda del Barcellona Johan Cruyff e l’allenatore Frank Rijkaard gli hanno entrambi chiesto di tornare sulla sua decisione e di restare al Camp Nou, ma di fronte alla prospettiva di una stagione in panchina Larsson preferisce giocare regolarmente per un altro paio di stagioni prima di appendere gli scarpini al chiodo.

Basta con la panchina
“Mi piace giocare a calcio e siedo troppo in panchina per i miei gusti – ha detto -. Compirò presto 35 anni e penso di poter giocare ancora per qualche anno, per cui preferisco tornare a casa e giocare con regolarità”. Anche così, comunque, il commiato del grande giocatore sarà un momento importante.

SIX young Celts have played their part in Scotland’s historic qualification for the UEFA Under 19 championships.

Two victories, over Bulgaria and host nation Belarus and a draw with reigning champions France has put the Scots through to the finals of the competition for the first time in the 20 years since its foundation.

Celtic goalkeeper Scott Fox, defender Scott Cuthbert and midfielders Ryan Conroy, Simon Ferry, Charlie Grant and Michael McGlinchey all featured as the Scots emerged from Group Three as the clear winners – with Celtic U19 captain, Grant voted Player of the Tournament by UEFA officials.
