Safer Driving
The Garda Síochána is committed to reducing the level of accidents on our roads. Operation Lifesaver is the National Garda enforcement campaign that principally focuses on speeding offences, the non-wearing of seatbelts and drink-driving.
Whilst there has been a 12% decrease in the level of death and injury on our roads in the last two years, many more accidents could be avoided if road users exercised more care and attention. Here are a few reminders that will help you, as a road user, to have a safe journey.
SLOW DOWN and observe the speed limits
ALWAYS wear your seat belt, even on the shortest of journeys. All passengers in a car should wear their belts too.
NEVER EVER DRINK AND DRIVE
During the dark winter days, it's a good idea to drive with your headlights switched on - in the 'dip' position
Cyclists should always try and be clearly visible - front and rear lights during darkness are obligatory by law. They should also wear bright reflective clothing.
Pedestrians should also wear bright reflective clothing and carry a torch if walking on unlit roads at night.
Driving on long journeys can be tiring and exhausting - this often leads to accidents. As soon as you feel tired pull over and take a break.
Keep you distance from the vehicle in front, especially in wet conditions.
Remember to regularly check your vehicle for any defects such as faulty lights or worn tyres.
Be patient and give yourself the proper amount of time for your journey. Driver impatience leads to risks such as dangerous overtaking. Its better to be late than not to arrive at all.
If you witness dangerous driving, suspected drunken driving etc., call the Gardaí on 999. Try to get the make, colour and registration number of the vehicle and the direction in which it is heading. Don't leave it to others to call us - your call could save a life.
