Celtic Tiger? Now we’ve gone and bought Britain

AN Irish property development firm is attempting to buy the island of Great Britain.

But the Great Britain in question bears no resemblance to the rain-drenched and tea-loving one we are familiar with.

Instead it is part of the high-profile $14billion The World development off the coast of Dubai.

The extraordinary scheme is a luxury complex comprising 300 man-made islands laid out like a map of the world. Each of the islands represents a country.

Industry sources have revealed that Clare-based Larionovo — headed by Ray Norton — is in negotiations to buy the island of Great Britain from Dubai’s state-owned building firm Nakheel Developments.

Owners of properties in the Dubai development are said to include footballers David Beckham and Michael Owen as well as Pop Idol creator Simon Cowell and actress Liz Hurley.

Larionovo is thought to be canvassing a number of well-known Irish businessmen to join a consortium for the extraordinary deal.

Industry sources suggested that Britain may cost about ¤70million. Last month Norton and a group of other Irish businessmen spent ¤20million to buy the island of Ireland in the development.

Ireland will have about 170 apartments and 15 luxury villas with their own marina — plus the ubiquitous Irish bar.

The project — which began four years ago — is due to be completed in 2012.
