Reading the Stars: Irish Children's Print Media in the 1950s
Dr Mary Shine Thompson, English Department, St. Patrick’s College Drumcondra
Do you remember the touch and smell of newsprint? Did Bunty or Hotspur ever arrive rolled and bound with twine? Did you ever choose Patricia Lynch and Eilís Dillon from the library shelves? Did Enid Blyton, Our Boys and Hans Christian Andersen appeal? Maybe you encountered Rex Readers when you were at school or read about how St Patrick baptized the pagan Celts... This lecture will revisit the children's books and the reading culture – such as it was – of the 1950s.
