i canti sugli H blocks
on the blanket
The truth comes hard as the cold rain
On your face in the heat of the storm
And the stories I'm hearing would shock you
To believe that such deeds can go on
You can starve men and take all their clothing
You can beat them up till they fall
You can break up the bodies but never the spirit
Of those on the blanket
The truth must be told so I'll tell it

It all began five years ago
Ciaran Nugent refused to be branded
A criminal and to wear prison clothes
They threw him out naked to H-Block
And spat out filthy abuse
And they left him awake till the cold light of day
With only a blanket

(chorus)

England, your sins are not over
The H-Block still stands in your name
And though many voices have cried out to you
It's still your shame
If we stay silent we're guilty
While these men lie naked and cold

In H-Block tonight remember the fight

Of those on the blanket

the h block song
I am a proud young Irishman
From Ulster's hill my life began
A happy boy through green fields ran
And I kept God's and man's laws
But when my age was barely ten
My country's wrongs were told again
By tens of thousands marching men
And my heart stared to their cause.

(chorus)

So I'll wear no convict's uniform
Nor meekly serve my time
That Britain might brand Ireland's fight
800 Years of crime

****************

I learned of centuries of strife
Of cruel laws injustice rife
And I saw now in my own young life
The fruits of foreign sway
Protesters threatened, tortured, maimed
Divisions nurtured passions flamed
Outrage prevoked rights cause defamed
This is the conqueror's ways

(chorus)

***************

Descendant's of proud Connaught clan
Concannon served cruel Britain's paln
Man's inhumanity to man
Had spawned a trusty slave
No strangers are thses bolts and locks
No new design these dark H-Blocks
Cruel Cromwell lives while Mason* stalks
The bully taunts the brave

(chorus)

***************

Does Britain need one thousand years
Of protest, riots, death and tears
Or will this last decade of fears
Of eighty decades spell
An end to Ireland's agony
New hope for human dignity
And will the last obscenity
Be this grim H-Block cell

the ballad of boobby sands
Come gather round me one and all
My song to you I'll sing,
In memory of a brave young Irishman,
Who would not concede defeat,
From his stand would not retreat.
I sing of the gallant Bobby Sands,
Bobby Sands.
Yes I sing of the late great Bobby Sands.
He organised the hunger strike
To win and change, reform,
To stop the evil tyrants in their craze,
To regain the five demands
He took his young life in his hands
For the betterment of comrades in Armagh
And in the Maze
Armagh and the H-Blocks of the Maze.

They tried to break your spirit
But no way could they succeed,
The phoenix in your heart they tried to quell
With their beatings, degradation,
All in vain totheirfrustration,
For the more they tried, the more you would rebel
You would rebel,
With dignity your principle did swell.
But freedom was to come to you
On a rain soaked Tuesday morn
From the heavens tears of patriots were shed
With the joy that you are free
To walk with Tone and Connolly,
Forever live the name of Bobby Sands

We shall endear
Your name, to foe shall always threaten tear.

So to all you people
My song to you I've sung
In memory of a brave young Belfast man
Who would not concede defeat,
From his stand would not retreat.
I sing of the gallant Bobby Sands,
Bobby Sands.
Yes I sing of the late great Bobby Sands.

I'm ninety miles form Dublin town
I'm in an H-Block cell
To help you understand me plight
This story now I'll tell
I'm on the blanket protest

My efforts must not fail
For I'm joined by men and women
In the Kesh and Armagh jail

It all began one morning
I was dragged to Castleragh
And though it was three years ago
It seems like yesterday
For three days kicked and beaten
I then was forced to sign
Confessions that convicted me
Of deeds that were not mine

Sentenced in a Diplock court
My protest it began
I could not wear this prison gear
I was a blanket man
I'll not accept their status
I'll not be criminalised
That's the issue in the blocks

For which we give our lives
Over there in London town
Oh how they'd laugh and sneer
If they could only make us wear
Their loathsome prison gear
Prisoners of war that's what we are
And that we must remain

The blanket protest cannot end
Till status we regain
I've been beaten round the romper room
Because I won't say 'Sir'
I've been frog marched down the landing
And dragged back by the hair
I've suffered degradation

Humility and pain
Still the spirit does not falter
British torture is in vain
I've been held in scalding water
While me back with deck scrubs was tore
I've beenscratched and cut from head to foot
Then thrown out on the floor
I've suffered mirror searches
Been probed by drunken bears
I've heard me comrades cry and scream

Then utter useless prayers
Now with the news that's coming in
Our protest must not fail
For now we're joined by thirty girls
In Armagh's women's jail
So pay attention Irishmen

And Irish women too
And show the Free State rulers that

Their silence will not do
Though it's ninety miles from Dublin town
It seems so far away
There's more attention to our plight
In the USA

Now you've heard the story
Of this filthy living hell
Remember ninety miles away
I'm still in an H-Block cell

The time has come

The Time Has Come

The time has come to part my love, and I must go away.
I'll leave you now my darling girl
No longer can I stay
My heart like yours is breaking
Together we'll prove strong
The road I take will show the world the suffering that goes on.

The gentle clasp that holds my hand must loosen and let go
Please help me through the door
But instinct tells you no
Our vow it is eternal
And will bring you dreadful pain
But if our demands aren't recognised, don't call me back again.

How their sorrow touched us all in those final days
When it was time she held the door, and touched his sallow face.
The flame he lit while leaving, is still burning strong
And by the light its plain to see the suffering still goes on

The time has come to part my love, and I must go away.
I'll leave you now my darling girl, no longer can I stay.

Background information: This song was written about Patsy O Hara, who died on hunger strike in Long Kesh Prison Camp in 1981. It is about Patsys girlfriend, who travelled up from Dublin shortly before he passed away. Patsy was very weak and he would take one breath every 15 minutes before he eventually passed away. Christy wrote the song with this in mind.

Non me ne importa nulla.

Richard O'Rawe
Blanketmen - An untold story of the H-Block hunger strike
New Island - 9,99 pounds

Ten Brave Men

Bobby Sands was his name, He Died for the cause of Freedom
A hunger strike they commenced, To fight for the right as Freemen
In the Summer of 81' Ten brave men, the Crown they took on
The ten were prisoners of war...But Englands leaders let them die one by one

The year they murdered Ten Brave men, and the Black flags were flying
The Year they murdered Ten Brave men, and all the people were crying They sang
"Lord we have lost our son's, now we'll make sure this war is won"

Bobby was elected MP, and one day he said to me,
"People must fight for the right to live in a land thats free"
I Got 14 years in Jail, and this hunger strike it must not fail.
The English we'll alway's detest, but they should never have taken the very best.

The year they murdered Ten Brave men, and the Black flags were flying
The Year they murdered Ten Brave men, and all the people were crying They sang
"Lord we have lost our son's, now we'll make sure this war is won"

Like His father before him, He was a workin' man
Like his Comrades beside him, He took a Rebel stand
He was a Rebel, proud and brave, but Thatcher laid him in his grave
I swear by the blood in my vains, The Irish people will someday have their say.

The year they murdered Ten Brave men, and the Black flags were flying
The Year they murdered Ten Brave men, and all the people were crying They sang,
"Lord we have lost our son's, now we'll make sure this war is won"

Mc Keown dixit
Laurence McKeown wrote:

Death now began to appear as a release from a weak and troublesome body. A phenomenon I noticed which indicated that death was about two, no more than three, days away was that a hunger striker's bowels would open. I believe I first identified it in the case of Tom McElwee. Following it, there was a marked deterioration. Not that the bowel movement was the actual cause of deterioration, but was an indication that the person was in the very last stages of life. Then Red Mick told me one night in the canteen that he had diarrhoea most of the day. I already knew as one of the MOs had told me, so I didn’t comment much other than to ask if he was OK, and he said hew was. Both of us knew what it signalled. Mickey was already very weak by this stage, though because his features were less sharp he didn’t appear as gaunt as other such as Big Doc, Kevin and Tom had. This was the last night we talked together. The following day he didn’t get out of bed and his family were allowed to stay in the hospital on a permanent basis. I could hear them going in and out of his cell for the few days he lingered on, but didn’t go in myself as I would've felt I was intruding. Amongst the hunger strikers there were no goodbyes said, only 'See you.' His death occurred silently. All that was heard was the stretcher knocking against the wall as it manoeuvred through the doorway.
