Archive studentship


In association with the School of History and Archives, University College Dublin the Irish Film Institute wishes to offer a full time one year Studentship for the period 1st September 2006 to 31st August 2007. The post is intended to provide relevant work experience for a graduate who intends to apply for the MA (Archives and Records Management) at U.C.D.



The post will require the student to work on the paper and photographic collections of the Irish Film Archive with tasks selected to familiarise the student with basic archival theory and practice.



Candidates should have an honours degree or expect to obtain one this year. The value of the Studentship will be €15,000.

The post will require the student to work on the paper and photographic collections of the Irish Film Archive with tasks selected to familiarise the student with basic archival theory and practice. The student will work to the Head of Archive and the Archive Librarian.



The paper collection of the Irish Film Archive of the Irish Film Institute provides primary research material on Irish moving image history. It comprises film posters; publicity and location stills; unpublished scripts; production files; filmographies of Irish film-makers; newspaper cuttings; reviews.
A related collection is held by the Tiernan MacBride Library of the Irish Film Institute. This is a reference library holding published material on Irish and international cinema.


Main Duties and responsibilities

Tasks will be selected with a view to developing a familiarity with basic archival practice and are likely to include:

• Listing of new acquisitions to provide an initial assessment of content and condition

• Cataloguing recent acquisitions and the retrospective cataloguing of specific collections according to established archive procedures


• Packing collections in conservation grade materials to ensure their long-term preservation

• Assisting with the Archive’s ongoing digitisation of the photograph and poster collections

• Reading room duties, including answering research queries and facilitating readers in accessing the collections

• Other relevant duties as required

Candidates should have an honours degree or expect to obtain one this year. An interest in history and audio -visual material would be an advantage. The value of the Studentship will be €15,000.

While the studentship will involve full time attendance at the Irish Film Archive during normal working hours 10-6 reasonable allowance will be made, subject to satisfactory performance, for periods of illness and leave breaks on the basis of 1.75 working days for each month worked.

The Studentship will be terminated by the IFI in the event of misconduct by the student or persistent failure for any reason to carry out satisfactorily the duties assigned to him/her.

Letters of application should be submitted to the Head of the Irish Film Archive, Irish Film Institute, 6 Eustace Street, Dublin 2 by close of business on Friday July 21st 2006

Applicants will be short listed on the basis of the information contained in their application. Interviews for short listed candidates will be held in late July/early August.
