Ireland's Stephen Carr pursues Thierry Henry


France failed to score at home for the second successive time in a FIFA World Cup qualifier tonight, as the Republic of Ireland produced a spirited and skilful display to earn a goalless draw in Paris.

O'Shea chance
The visitors enjoyed the better of an intense encounter and would have taken all three points had John O'Shea not side-footed the game's best chance fractionally wide of the upright. The draw leaves both sides in contention in Group 4 with five points from three games.

Midfield battle
With Irish supporters outnumbering and out-singing their French counterparts in a vibrant Stade de France it was the away team who started in inspired fashion. Roy Keane and Kevin Kilbane were quicker to the loose balls than Rio Antonio Mavuba and Olivier Dacourt in central midfield and Fabien Barthez, captaining France in the absence of the suspended Patrick Vieira, had to rush off his line to prevent Clinton Morrison latching on to Roy Keane's through pass on two minutes.

Powerful shot
France were struggling to get a foothold in the game when Kilbane robbed Mavuba in the eleventh minute and saw his powerful shot deflect wide for a corner. Steve Finnan then tried his luck from outside the penalty area but the Liverpool FC player shot straight at Barthez. The one-way traffic continued and Kilbane went close to giving Ireland the lead on 27 minutes glancing a header wide from Finnan's cross.

French switch
Robert Pires switched to the right wing and Sylvain Wiltord the left as France looked to change the pattern of the game. They created the first opening ten minutes before half-time when Wiltord teed up William Gallas on the right side of the penalty area but the Chelsea FC defender had his rising shot saved by Shay Given. The chance sparked the home side to life and two minutes later Pires shuffled across the edge of the penalty area before unleashing a swerving shot that was brilliant tipped round the post by Given.

Barthez on form
Ireland were back in control after the break, however, with Barthez immediately forced to make a sprawling save from Andy Reid's low drive. Henry's long-range effort was smartly saved by Given but the better chances were coming at the other end and Barthez parried Damien Duff's stinging volley over the crossbar in spectacular fashion in the 62nd minute.

Henry scare
Ireland were enjoying their best spell of pressure when, with 20 minutes remaining, Reid's floated free-kick found O'Shea unmarked at the far post but he failed to hit the target with a right-foot shot. Given had to push Henry's shot behind in the closing stages but it was a rare moment of concern for the impressive Irish who held on to secure a deserved point.

Tra l'altro è ufficialmente riconosciuto dal Celtic Glasgow.

Tra l'altro, ho assistito alla partita francia-eire in mezzo ad una folla festante di irlandesi piuttosto alticci (tra i quali mi confondevo allegramente, dopo un certo numero di pinte urlando ireland ireland LOL). Tutto questo al Quay's di Temple Bar di Morisiana memoria. Ad un certo punto uno mi fa: "ma tu mica sei francese!!" e io "whaddahell ya talkin' aboush!*". "Ok, allora puoi cantare". LOL! :)

* L'aboush in questione era non tanto un tentativo di scopiazzatura dell'accento locale quanto un effetto di strascico verbale dovuto a ingestione massiccia di alcool etilico, ahime' puzzo ancora di straniero lontano un miglio.

Ho visto gli highlights di Francia-Eire in televisione ed un irlandese con i piedi quadrati si è mangiato un gol incredibile. Manco all'oratorio sbagliano gol così ! Ek si che si sarebbe fatto un nel passo avanti alle qualificazioni. Mi dite un po' chi era l'autore del misfatto e quale squadra di club ha la sfortuna di averlo ingaggiato ?

difensore del Man utd del quale fra l'altro si parla molto bene
ovviamente quasi tutti i difensori hanno per tradizione custodie per banane al posto dei piedi

Che splendida giornata, nella "mia" gradinata Nord, nel mio stadio con 30.000 irlandesi !!!

Grande giocatore. Dotato di piedi "a banana" favolosi. Raramente si possono ammirare giocatori simili in giro.

The Republic of Ireland Under-19 team scored a remarkable 2-0 victory over Italy in the second of two friendlies against Italy in Bisceglie, Bari this afternoon.

Sean McCaffrey's team built on their 0-0 result on Tuesday to outplay and outscore their more experienced rivals.

After a scoreless first half, the game was finally turned Ireland's way in a six minute spell early in the second half.

First Diarmuid O'Carroll of Celtic netted in the 53rd min and just short of the hour Ipswich Town's Billy Clarke added a second.

Indeed the Irish could have made 3-0 three minutes from time when substitute Shane Long of Cork City had a diving header come off a post. McCaffrey gave all his players a run out in this game.

Speaking after the game the Irish Manager paid tribute to his players and said: "This was a great result considering we lost ten players from the original squad. To draw with Italy was great but to beat them 2-0 is simply superb".

Eccolo...

Visto che fra poco allenerò il Cork (sul loro forum ufficiale ho scritto due topic ed ero già il loro MITO) voglio dire qualche parola sulla nazionale.

A differenza dei club, ha sempre fatto delle buone figure, la considero una squadra media con buoni giocatori.

Per le qualificazioni a Germania 2006 è messa bene: in tre si giocano due posti. Peccato per il pari in Israele al '90 ma credo che sarà decisivo l'incontro in Irlanda con la Francia (che non sta brillando).

Per intanto la Repubblica d'Irlanda è capolista primi dopo aver vinto 2-0 contro le Far Oer a Torshavn. Il momento è delicato, ce la si può fare.
